Bae, Kim & Lee LLC handled a number of outbound energy project financings for key client K-Exim, including Eui Jong Chung and foreign attorney Annie Eunah Lee assisting with the construction financing of four APR-1400 nuclear reactors in Abu Dhabi, and Chung and Ho Jin Kim advising on the financing of an 89.1 MW-class wind power plant in Jordan. The team also acts for sponsors; it advised Korea East-West Power on the project financing of the Old Harbour gas-fired power station project in Jamaica. M&A specialist Joonki Yi heads the practice.

Kim & Chang’s ‘very professional practice’ is regularly instructed by sponsors on the most significant domestic and international energy projects. Recent highlights include Young Kyun Cho acting for Goseong Green Power on the financing and construction of Korea’s biggest private coal-fired power plant, and practice co-head Ick Ryol Huh and the ‘very dedicatedChang-hee Shin advising Korea East-West Power on its participation in the Kalsel-1 2x100MW coal-fired power project in Indonesia. In the lender space Dong-Seok Oh is assisting K-Exim with the project finance for the construction and operation of a coal-fired power plant in Botswana. The practice’s expertise extends to the infrastructure sector where Cho acted for Kyobo Life Insurance and Hanwha Life Insurance as arrangers on the financing of a new highway from Seoul to Munsan. Yon Kyun Oh co-heads the team and was active in a number of corporate investment energy deals.

Lee & Ko’s practice covers domestic and cross-border projects in industries such as power and waste, and the team also handled the finance arrangements for a large number of domestic transport projects. In one example of the latter practice head Hun Ko advised Doosan Engineering & Construction and other sponsors on the financing of the Shinbundang Double Track Railway, running from Youngsan to Gangnam. Ko was also busy in the energy sector where he is acting for Kookmin Bank and Shinhan Bank on the financing of the Goseong high-coal thermal power plant project in South Gyeongsang Province. Other names to note include Dong Eun Kim and Kwang Yul Kim, who are assisting Shinhan Bank and Shinhan BNP Paribas Asset Management on the finance and construction of three solar power plants in Japan, and practice co-head Tom Shin.

Shin & Kim impresses with the breadth of its practice, which takes in energy and power and natural resources, as well as a wide range of infrastructure projects. The ‘top quality’ team is led by Sang-Hyun Lee, who together with Hyun Ju Helen Pak, advised a variety of lenders including K-Sure and K-Exim on the financing of a hospital campus project in Turkey. Another key figure is ‘proactive and dynamic’ senior foreign attorney Michael Chang, whose in-depth experience in the Asia region includes acting for Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Hyundai Engineering as part of a consortium involved in the construction of a 1GW power plant project in Indonesia. In the domestic market Lee led a team that advised GS Energy and Korea Western Power on the financing of the construction and operation of the third LNG combined-cycle power plant in Pyoung Taek. The team’s work extended to M&A investment as well as advising on the renovation of the western principal underground road in Seoul.

Yulchon leverages off its overseas offices in Russia, China, Vietnam and Myanmar to handle a range of outbound energy mandates for clients such as Kepco and Knoc. The team has particular expertise in advising sponsors on greenfield power projects, but it also assists with M&A and lender-side finance. Key contacts include Bong Hee Han and senior foreign counsels Tong Soo Chung and Raymond Kang, who ‘gets the point quickly and knows how to manage the work from the client’s perspective’.

Yoon & Yang LLC often handles M&A and related financing in the energy sector. Names to note include head of practice Soongki Yi, who advises clients such as Kepco on outbound acquisitions, and senior foreign attorney Hanchil Kim.
