Kim Chang & Lee
Bae, Kim & Lee LLC’s diverse client base includes borrowers and sponsors as well as developers, lenders, and contractors. Its impressive track record includes large projects such as the New Songdo City development, the Incheon International Airport railway construction, and the Seoul Subway Line 9 project. It also advised on LG Power’s construction of a combined heat-and-power plant in Anyang-Bucheon.
Kim & Chang ‘provides value for money’, and has ‘great understanding of Korean companies’ on outbound transactions. A team led by Yon Kyun Oh advised KEPCO on its $8m acquisition of a stake in Strathmore Minerals, and on a subsequent $32m joint venture. Oh and Changheon Kwak ‘understand the client’s business’.
Lee & Ko’s practice includes power plant projects, for which Tom Shin is recommended, and fossil fuel and renewables work – such as petrochemicals plants – and it also advises on railroads and other transport infrastructure projects. The team has seen an increase in multi-jurisdictional instructions, including projects in Vietnam, Chile and Peru. The firm recruited Young Jae Cho from Shin & Kim, who brought in Korean Resource Corporation as a client, and oil and gas expert Jin Kim, formerly general counsel of the Korea National Oil Corporation.
Shin & Kim’s ‘brilliant team’ has ‘strength, depth, and the experience to take on complex matters’, and is ‘commercially oriented’. Sang-Hyung Lee has ‘a superbly analytical mind, and experience in acting for stakeholders’. Michael Chang is ‘outstanding, crisp, and commercial’. The firm is particularly active in PPP infrastructure: for example, it represented the National Pension Service in its investment in a large Australian road project.
Sechang & Co.’s practice is headed by Hyun Kim and Young Whan Ahn. It has advised on several large infrastructure projects, including the Osan-Ichon highway, Ilsan Bridge and Incheon-Seoul highway. Clients include Daelim, Kumho Tyres, Halla, and Hyundai Development Company.
Song Wook Eun heads Yulchon’s two-partner team, which also includes Tong Chan Shin and Kyoung Yeon Kim. The team recently obtained the dismissal of a claim against a major gas client, and it has experience advising on nuclear-related issues.
Hwang Mok Park P.C. has considerable experience of power plant construction in the Middle East.
Jipyong Jisung is active in the private equity sphere, forming funds to invest in the development of natural resources. In 2012, it advised Daewoo International on acquiring shares in a Russian company with forestry rights in Siberian forests.
Soo Chang Kim at Kim Chang & Lee has considerable infrastructure expertise.
