Bae, Kim & Lee LLC has a team of ‘distinguished professionals’ who are ‘helpful in all aspects, from a commercial and legal perspective’. Highlights included acting for KEPCO in the successful formation of a joint venture with German engineering firm Uhde GmbH, with the aim of developing and engineering a series of power plants using high-efficiency coal gasification technology. Joonki Yi heads the team, and Hee Gang Shin has ‘excellent negotiating skills’.

Yon Kyun Oh leads a team of project finance specialists at Kim & Chang who act for energy clients ranging from importers and distributors to project developers and consultants, investment companies and government institutions. In 2010, the team acted for KEPCO and the Korean government in negotiating an inter-governmental agreement with the Republic of Turkey to develop, construct and operate a nuclear power plant in Sinop, Turkey, utilising a Korean-type nuclear reactor.

Lee & Ko’s ‘premier’ projects practice provides ‘timely responses’, and has ‘great industry knowledge’. Thomas Shin leads a team of six dedicated partners who provide M&A-related expertise in energy and natural resources projects. It acted for STX Energy and Korea National Oil Corporation in their acquisition of a stake in an oil field in Alabama; and for POSCO Power Corporation in acquiring 30% participation from AES Mong Duong Holdings in a project involving a 1,200MW anthracite coal-fired power plant located in the Quang Ninh province of Vietnam.

Shin & Kim’s team provides project and acquisition finance advice to natural resources and power companies in Korea, and was strengthened by the recent arrival of Michael Chang from Allens Arthur Robinson. In 2010, it acted for SK Networks in its acquisition of SK Energy’s coal and mineral development business, and for Enfinity Asia in its investment in a 10MW photovoltaic project in the North Gyeongsangbuk province of Korea.

Yulchon’s environment and energy team is appreciated for its ‘top levels of knowledge and expertise, and unparalleled commitment to innovation’. The six-partner team acted for KEPCO in its ongoing project to amend the operating rules of Korea Power Exchange, and advised Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co on the establishment of a bidding process for the contract to construct new Uljin nuclear power plants. Sung Wook Eun leads the team, and Hyoung Young Ryu provides ‘timely and logical business-oriented advice’.

Highlights for Jipyong & Jisung’s projects team included advising Korea Investment Trust Management in the formation of a fund to invest in CDM and CER projects, and acting for Barclays, Korea Investment & Securities and LG International on the establishment of a private equity fund for the development of overseas natural resources.
