Highlights for Jeong Han Lee’s employment team at Bae, Kim & Lee LLC included obtaining favourable results for the National Agricultural Co-operative Federation in fixed-term employment termination cases; and advising a number of clients on negotiations for collective bargaining with trade unions.

Kim & Chang is considered a go-to firm for employment law matters, fielding a 20-strong team that provides advice to foreign and Korean multinationals including Hyundai, Standard Chartered First Bank Korea, and ING Life Insurance. Chun Wook Hyun leads the team, which was strengthened by the arrival of several senior consultants from Deloitte.

Lee & Ko’s 22-lawyer employment team is one of the largest in South Korea, and is notable for its labour union and restructuring-related expertise. Work highlights included advising Deutsche Bank on the introduction of a new retirement pension scheme in Korea. Wan Joo and Sang Hoon Lee jointly head the team.

Shin & Kim’s standalone employment practice handles both contentious and advisory work for a client base that includes Bank of America Merrill Lynch and AIG Global Real Estate Investment. In 2010 it acted for ACE Group on trade union and employment issues arising from its acquisition of New York Life Korea. Young-Seok Ki heads the team.

Yoon & Yang LLC acted for Korea Maritime Environment Corp in its successful appeal to the Supreme Court relating to the validity of the amendments to the rules regarding employees’ retirement age and its adoption of a non-progressive scale for severance payments. Sang Hoon Park leads the team, which also acts for the likes of Burberry Korea and Korea Rural Community Corp.

Yulchon’s employment team is valued for its ‘responsiveness and appropriateness of advice’. Hee Chul Kang and his 11-partner team handle both contentious and transactional matters, and in 2010 acted for Korea Railroad in a damages claim against its trade union, which was the largest such claim to date.

Barun Law provides contentious and non-contentious employment law advice to international companies and foreign governments, as well as foreign individuals. It acted for Walmart on the restructuring and downsizing of its Korean buying operation, which included advising on staff redundancy measures.

Hwang Mok Park P.C.’s employment law team advises on promotion, disciplinary action and other HR-related issues, as well as reviewing and preparing employment agreements, collective agreements and employment rules for its corporate client base. Young-Eun An is the key figure.

Kim Chang & Lee advises on collective bargaining agreements and employee relations. Doo-Hee Cha is recommended.
