Webber Wentzel reinforced its standing in hedge funds with the hire of Michael Denenga from Dentons; clients praise him for his 'invaluable support and understanding of complex technical matters without losing sight of the big picture' and his 'thought leadership in terms of industry best practice and global standards'. His arrival has prompted an even greater focus on black and African fund managers. The firm advises a number of major private equity funds, including Ethos Private Equity. Recent highlights include advising on the establishment of Ashburton, a mezzanine debt fund established to make investments in Sub-Saharan Africa. The team is 'professional', 'ethical', 'very thorough' and is praised for its 'focus on client service'. Department head Nicole Paige  is praised for her 'industry knowledge' and Ashford Nyatsumba is 'extremely professional and service oriented'.

Bowmans is a burgeoning presence in private equity funds, including pan-African fund structuring and formation. The expansion of the firm's tax department has further augmented the funds practice, which is led by the highly reputed John Bellew. Wally Horak is recommended for tax structuring.

Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr is building its standing in the industry thanks to the efforts of funds partner John Gillmer, who is 'solutions driven, responsive, and has a technical knowledge of the industry', along with senior tax structuring specialist Mark Linington. Gillmer led the team that advised 27four on the structuring and establishment of the 27four Black Business Growth Fund. Senior associate Wayne Murray also impresses.

ENSafrica continues to develop its position in collective investment schemes and hedge funds. It is also active in private equity fund structuring and investments in private equity funds by institutional investors. Clients include Absa, Capitalworks, Citadel,¬†Government Institution Pension Fund ‚Äď Namibia, and Old Mutual. Johan Loubser has 'a great grasp of the law, the developments and market practices' and 'his advice is always clear and to the point'.

Norton Rose Fulbright has a solid background in private equity, hedge funds and collective investment schemes. It is especially noted for South Africa-based hedge funds, along with infrastructure and energy funds, and black economic empowerment private equity funds. Shawn Barnett is the key name.

Werksmans Attorneys has notable strength acting for regulated and unregulated South African funds and offshore funds. The firm has an impressive institutional investor and asset manager client base with Shayne Krige an experienced figure in the investment funds space. He led the team that advised Barak Fund Management, an offshore fund platform, on drafting amendments to fund documentation, assisting with derivative contracts and setting up new funds. Senior associate Hilah Laskov is a key team member.
