Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow's team is 'knowledgeable, pragmatic and client oriented' and provides 'a good level of service' and 'good response times.' Kelvin Poa jointly heads the team with the 'client-oriented, flexible and dedicated' Derek Kwan, who has considerable real estate fund formation expertise. Associate Jens Carle is also noted for his 'very structured and dedicated' approach. The team's expertise spans private equity, venture capital, hedge funds, real estate, energy and distressed assets and it stands out for its expertise across the region. It advised Godrej Fund Management on the formation and first closing of the Godrej Office Fund I, which was its entry into India’s office sector and which raised $110m from institutional investors in Australia and Europe at its first closing in 2017.

The funds team at Clifford Chance is highly rated for its 'ability to draw on expertise worldwide where needed' and is 'responsive and flexible'. Kai-Niklas Schneider is 'extremely attuned to clients' needs' and has 'excellent technical knowledge and market intelligence'. The 'strong team of associates' includes 'the very smart' Vishal Mashru, 'who is always on top of his work'. Counsel Daryl Liu is also noted. The practice advises client on all aspects of the funds lifecycle from structuring and launches through to secondary transactions and restructuring. It advises regional and global fund managers and sovereign wealth funds and a wide variety of private investment funds, including private equity, real estate, infrastructure and venture capital funds. Senior associate Luke Chen was a new arrival in October 2017 from Drew & Napier LLC.

Dechert is 'one of the top two or three firms in Singapore for fund formation and management' according to one client and is 'extremely knowledgeable and applies a sensible commercial approach'. Practice head Dean Collins is 'very strong on fund formation and fund management - one of the top practitioners in the Singapore market' and senior associate  Claire Bentley has 'ample experience for someone of her level' and is 'very diligent, careful and extremely responsive'. Senior associate Albert Tse is experienced in areas such as private equity, debt and real estate fund formation and was part of the team that advised a client on a co-investment fund that acquired a stake in the education sector. The group is known for its advice on private equity and real estate fund formations and its ability to harness expertise within its global network.

As part of the firm’s global investment management group, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP's team has expertise across Asia and beyond. It counts institutional asset managers, private equity fund managers and sovereign wealth funds among its clients. Robert Griffin, who heads the practice, has expertise in private equity, hedge and other alternative investment funds, including in the areas of real estate, distressed debt, emerging markets and venture capital. Divya Thakur specialises in emerging markets and has a focus on developing the team's India practice. Benoit Champon has left the firm.

At Jones Day, practice head Dennis Barsky has considerable experience advising sponsors and investors on the formation of private equity, real estate and hedge funds and counts Asia-based real estate fund managers and investors among his clients. Ben Witherall, who was recently promoted to counsel, is another key contact. In recent work, the team assisted the alternative asset management firm PAG with an investment from the Blackstone Strategic Capital Holdings Fund. It also advised Asia Capital Real Estate on the formation of Asia Capital Real Estate Fund 3, which was established to invest in distressed residential properties in the United States. Carolyn McNabb has left the practice to return to New Zealand.

King & Wood Mallesons' team, which is led by John Sullivan, has wide-ranging funds expertise in the real estate, infrastructure, private equity and financial services sectors. Its work spans areas such as funds-related M&A and it also acts for sovereign wealth and pension funds and handles cross-border investments that involve Europe and North America. Experienced special counsel Suzanne Gibson handles work involving the structuring and establishing of investment funds and was part of the team advising  Macquarie on the establishment of the Macquarie Asia Infrastructure Fund 2, which raised $3.3bn of investor commitments. In other work, it is assisting Colonial First State Global Asset Management ongoing capital raising for its Global Diversified Infrastructure Fund; an open-ended fund investing in infrastructure assets in OECD countries. Senior associate Chi Ha joined the team from Allens in July 2017.

The funds team at Simmons & Simmons 'is made up of very experienced individuals who provide well-considered, pragmatic advice and provide excellent value for money'. Practice head Jek-Aun Long is valued for 'providing insightful advice and guidance'. Supervising associate Benedict Tan is 'technically proficient and provides excellent, pragmatic advice of a consistently high quality'. Associate Sun Zixiang is also noted. The team has expertise in a broad range of funds and related regulatory regimes pertaining to on and offshore funds. Its recent work has included assisting clients on the establishment of a Cayman Islands-domiciled master-feeder fund structure; obtaining a capital markets services licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore; and assisting with the establishment and launch of a client's cryptocurrency investment fund.

Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP's team stands out for its 'impressive knowledge and insight' and provides 'good value for money'. The well-regarded Arnold Tan heads the department and has expertise in the establishment of both on- shore and offshore investment funds, including hedge funds, private equity and real estate funds together with regulatory regimes. Other noted practitioners in the sizeable team include Philip Yeo , Leong Lu Yueh, Anne Yeo and associate Mifiona  Quah. The team advises on  all stages of the private investment fund cycle from formation to restructuring and winding-down including the handling of cross-border offerings. In recent work, it has acted for Mizuho Asia Partners and Nuvest Capital.

Shook Lin & Bok LLP's team is 'well connected and well versed in the asset and fund management industry'. The group 'always provides relevant insights and options that take into account the realistic business environment and constraints' and 'works alongside the client to problem solve'. The team is also highlighted as 'best in class for trustee work for REITS and on transaction management'. Tan Woon Hum is highly rated and Andrea Ng and associates Catherine Lim and Andrew Chow are also noted. Recent work includes acting for Gordian Capital Singapore on the establishment of a Singapore unit trust fund - the Greater China equity market neutral fund with a targeted size of $1bn, which was structured in collaboration with a large Chinese asset management company.

WongPartnership LLP's asset management and funds practice has particularly strong expertise in private equity and REITs matters. It acted for Indies Capital Partners on its strategic alliance with Värde Partners, the US global alternative investment firm; the work included the creation of an investment platform with the aim of investing in private debt in Indonesia. Other clients include TPG Capital, KKR Asia and Morgan Stanley Real Estate. Low Kah Keong leads the team and Felicia Marie Ng is a key contact.

Dentons Rodyk is, according to one client, 'a go-to firm for funds and REITs'. The team has expertise across the establishment of local and offshore funds, debt- or equity-linked securities and divestments. Clients include funds and asset management companies, fund managers, private equity investors and  venture capital funds, including BNP Paribas Trust Services Singapore, APS Asset Management and Vertex Venture Management. Lim I-An has a focus on private equity and venture capital funds including on- and offshore fund structures and S Sivanesan's broad practice includes advising fund managers, venture capital funds and start-ups.

Drew & Napier LLC is, for one client, 'a go-to firm for all Singapore funds work' and the team is 'always responsive and commercial and can handle the straight-forward matters as well as the more complex'. Petrus Huang and Ron Cheng, who stand out for their 'experience and knowledge', are strong in all aspects of funds management and private equity transactions together with regulatory regimes and related tax issues. The group is advising Raffles Ventures Partners on a number of matters, including sub-fund issuances, capital calls and the restructuring of a number of its funds. In other work, it is advising a private equity manager on certain investments. The team is also acting for a client that intends to form and manage an umbrella unit trust. Other work includes acting for Citicorp Trustee (Singapore) on setting up retail-authorised schemes with Citicorp acting as the trustee. The funds and private equity practice at Colin Ng & Partners LLP advises asset managers, financial institutions and investee companies on fund management and investment. The group has a focus on work involving investments into India and also serves Chinese clients. Key names include Bill Jamieson and Amit Dhume whose work includes advising one of Southeast Asia’s leading early stage private equity-focused funds on its successful closing. The team has also advised on a number of Cayman Islands-domiciled funds, including the formation and structuring of a fund focused on alternative renewable energy projects.
