Ampersand houses β€˜an excellent group’ of advocates, who handle a broad spectrum of practice areas, including commercial, planning, property and public law. The stable is particularly noted, however, for its very strong personal injury and clinical negligence team. A significant recent development saw Lisa Henderson QC, Marcus McKay QC and Lauren Sutherland QC all take silk in 2016. Practice manager Alan Moffat provides β€˜a first-class service’ and leads the β€˜extremely helpful’ clerking team.

Arnot Manderson Advocates’ areas of expertise include commercial litigation, intellectual property, personal injury, employment and family law. It also has a notable criminal practice. The clerks are β€˜very approachable’ and β€˜efficient’; β€˜someone always gets back to you very quickly’ and β€˜they provide useful information on availability of particular advocates as well as making suggestions for alternatives, where necessary’. Leading the team, Andrew Sutherland and Elizabeth Manderson are β€˜extremely helpful in resolving all queries and cannot be faulted’.

Viewed as a β€˜top-quality stable’, with β€˜market-leading strength in depth at both senior and junior level’, Axiom Advocates has a first-rate reputation for commercial law matters. Other predominant areas of strength include professional negligence, public law, insolvency, tax and personal injury. In 2016, Morag Ross QC took silk and James Wolffe QC was appointed to the position of Lord Advocate. On the support side, practice manager Lesley Flynn is β€˜very effective and understands the needs of solicitors’. Her team is β€˜always willing to help and takes the time to get to know clients’ likes and dislikes in terms of counsel so as to be able to provide a tailored selection for a particular matter’.

Black Chambers’ keystone practice area is criminal law, where advocates have expertise across a range of matters. Other areas of instruction include employment and health and safety cases, fatal accident inquiries, and environmental crime. Advocates’ clerk Lee-Anne Black is the main contact.

Compass Chambers has a notable reputation for personal injury and clinical negligence law, as well as a particularly strong health and safety/regulatory practice; high-profile fatal accident inquiries are a key area of instruction. Crime is another area of strength. In 2016, significant developments included Steve Love QC’s promotion to silk and Jillian Martin-Brown’s appointment as a summary sheriff. In the clerking team, β€˜the service is exceptional – individuals are friendly, welcoming, good to work with and very efficient’. Practice manager Gavin Herd β€˜deserves special mention’; β€˜all solicitors rate him highly’, β€˜he is very responsive’ and β€˜he knows his advocates extremely well’.

Practitioners at Hastie Stable are instructed in both civil and criminal law. With regards to the former, family law (predominantly children matters), public law and employment are notable areas of instruction. Advocates’ clerk Susan Hastie β€˜is great to work with’.

Glasgow-based Mackinnon Stable is predominantly noted for criminal law, but it also has a civil practice spanning areas such as family law, commercial law and professional negligence. In 2016, Ross Macfarlane was appointed as a summary sheriff. Banny Mackinnon is the practice manager.

Terra Firma Chambers has notable expertise in planning and environmental law, but other key areas include insolvency, commercial and tax matters, with Roy Martin QC possessing a niche practice in pensions litigation. In 2017, Alan Summers QC was appointed a senator of the College of Justice and J Gordon Reid QC retired. On the clerking side, practice manager Emma Potter is β€˜a pleasure to work with’ and β€˜extremely helpful’, going β€˜above and beyond for clients’. Her β€˜exceptional’ team is β€˜reactive, proactive, and always available and willing to assist’. Furthermore, individuals provide β€˜transparent fee structures for complex cases and always with a smile’.

With a reputation as β€˜undoubtedly the pre-eminent stable for family law’, Westwater Advocates is frequently instructed in high-profile divorce matters, children law and cross-border residence orders. Other practice areas include employment, crime, public law, planning and property.
