Victoria Bortkevicha heads the practice at Clifford Chance, which recently advised Bank Austria on a $350m syndicated pre-export finance facility. Other key figures include cross-border finance specialist Logan Wright, who is based in London, and counsel Vladimir Barbolin, who is a key name for syndicated lending, insolvency and real estate finance.

Herbert Smith Freehills CIS LLP provides ‘solutions in difficult situations’. Edward Baring, Artjom Buligin and ‘excellent’ practice head Olga Davydava are the key names. Highlights included advising Société Générale on a $500m prepayment loan facility provided to Bashneft.

Linklaters’ practice head Michael Bott advised a group of lenders, including Cat Financial, IGN and UniCredit, on the $1bn restructuring of Mechel’s debts. The group is also advising Sberbank on amendments to a $1.8bn financing provided to Antipinsky Refinery.

Allen & Overy Legal Services’ team ‘shows a great commitment to deals and puts great effort into achieving deal closings’. Stephen Matthews, Igor Gorchakov and Ilya Dvorkin, who handles structured and asset finance matters, are the key names. Goldman Sachs and UniCredit are clients.

Baker Botts L.L.P. is ‘highly responsive and gives pragmatic advice’. Konstantin Garmonin, who has ‘excellent business sense and pays great attention to detail’, recently advised Gazprombank on the RUB15bn restructuring of a group of companies. Maxim Levinson heads the practice.

Baker & McKenzie–CIS, Limited is increasingly active in the hedge fund, distressed asset and private equity space. Vladimir Dragunov handles secured lending, derivatives and project finance. Simon Morgan is the other name to note.

Dentons’ ‘very responsive’ team has ‘great business acumen and industry knowledge’. Timothy Stubbs heads the practice, which assisted European Investment Bank with the €85m financing of Myronivsky Hliboproduct, and advised JBIC on a $75m loan to Sberbank. Andrei Strijak handles acquisition finance and insolvency matters.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer advised VEB and Sberbank on the $2bn financing of the Moscow-St Petersburg toll road. Other clients include Gazprombank and Alfa-Bank. Mikhail Loktionov provides ‘quick and accurate advice’ and is ‘always available for discussion’.

Alexander Tsakoev is the key contact at Norton Rose Fulbright, which advises domestic and international lenders on major financings and transactions. Highlights included advising ING Bank, as part of a syndicate on international lenders, on a pre-export finance facility of up to $1bn.

White & Case LLC assisted a syndicate of lenders, including UniCredit, Société Générale and Rosbank, with a pre-export finance facility to PhosAgro. Other work included handling several major restructurings and advising on various regulatory matters. Natalia Nikitina and Maxim Kobzev are the practice co-heads.

ALRUD Law Firm’s Maxim Alekseyev recently advised Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) on the $390m financing of a combined-cycle cogeneration plant. Alexander Zharskiy is the practice head. Sberbank is also a client.

CMS provides ‘quality service and good industry knowledge at reasonable costs’. Konstantin Baranov heads the department, which advises domestic and foreign banks on high-profile financing deals. Key clients include Sberbank and UniCredit.

Chadbourne & Parke LLP (Moscow)’s team has ‘deep expertise in the market’ and provides ‘prompt and accurate advice’. Konstantin Konstantinov, who has ‘a great ability to assess risk’, and managing partner Andrei Baev are the key names. The firm retains a strong client base of blue-chip lenders and has advised on several major financings.

DLA Piper advised Aareal Bank on the $154m refinancing of a loan facility provided to Istra, and acted for Credit Europe Bank on amending a construction finance facility. Vyacheslav Khorovskiy is the main contact and English-qualified Karen Young is also recommended.

Hogan Lovells (CIS)’s Alexander Rymko advised ING Bank on a $1.2bn syndicated loan facility provided to Uralkali, and assisted ICBC with a RMB4.8bn loan facility arranged by three major Chinese banks.

King & Spalding LLP advises on Russian and foreign banking matters, and frequently handles major financings across Russia and the CIS. Sergey Komolov and Maya Melnikas are the names to note.

Latham & Watkins LLP provides ‘excellent legal services, profound commercial understanding and good value for money’. Ragnar Johannesen has ‘deep knowledge of the Russian market’, and, together with Mikhail Turetsky, advised Sberbank on a RUB1.7bn credit facility provided to Concept Group.

Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP’s Grigory Marinichev is ‘a strong and responsible lawyer, who manages the team well’ and has ‘an excellent knowledge of trade finance structures’. Sberbank and Vnesheconombank are notable clients.

Orrick (CIS) LLC advised VTB Bank on the $300m acquisition financing of Hotel Moscow, operated by Four Seasons, and also acted for Sberbank and VTB Bank on a RUB70bn loan to En+ Group. Dmitry Gubarev is the name to note.

At Dechert Russia LLC, highlights included advising Eurobank Ergasias in several recovery and foreclosure proceedings in connection with a defaulted loan, successfully obtaining a €40m judgment in favour of the client. Laura Brank heads the practice.

Gide Loyrette Nouel Vostok recently assisted Commerzbank with amendments to Russian pledge agreements and provided English law advice to EBRD on a KZT2.2bn loan to Kyzylzhar Su. Tim Theroux heads the practice.

Areas of expertise at Goltsblat BLP, the Russian practice of Berwin Leighton Paisner include syndicated lending, restructuring, derivatives and project finance. The team advised ICBC on the operating lease of several aircraft to Transaero, and on Transaero’s subsequent bankruptcy. Oleg Khokhlov is the key name.

KIAP (Korelskiy, Ischuk, Astafiev and Partners, Attorneys at Law) recently advised VTB Bank on a RUB50bn securitisation transaction. Julia Osadchaya is the leading figure.

Liniya Prava Law Firm has ‘strong technical expertise’. Practice head Andrey Novakovskiy has ‘a good understanding of Russian and international markets’.

Noerr’s team provides ‘timely and succinct responses to queries’. Vladislav Skvortsov and Stefan Wolfgang Weber have ‘a business-oriented approach’; they advise major banks on restructurings, project financings and acquisition financing.

Pepeliaev Group represented Rietumu Banka in several bankruptcy cases. Igor Marmalidi heads the practice and Lidia Gorshkova has ‘excellent industry knowledge’.

Vegas Lex’s Alexander Sitnikov recently advised an international lender on two $1bn-plus inter-bank loans to Russian banks.
