Arab Law Bureau has a strong corporate practice, including for restructuring work. It acted as lenders’ local counsel, supporting Allen & Overy LLP, on the Barzan gas project joint venture; and advised a large Bahrain-based bank on restructuring of an established joint venture company. On the finance side, it advised on a $1.5bn bond issuance and two ijara facilities, respectively of QAR1bn and QAR850m. John Whatnall heads Hassan A Alkhater Law Office’s corporate practice, which recently advised HSBC, Credit Suisse and Qinvest on a $750m sukuk issue by Qatar Islamic Bank, notable as being the first sukuk issued by a Qatari bank. The firm also advised a bank consortium led by Qatar National Bank on providing QAR1bn development financing to Northgate Company to build what will be Qatar’s largest shopping mall.
Al Tamimi & Company in association with Al Marri acted as local counsel for Qatar Navigation on its $9bn acquisition of Qatar Shipping, the largest ever merger of Qatari public companies and the first merger to take place under the new takeover regime. Other clients include Aspire, Dubai Islamic Bank, Halliburton, and Emirates Airlines. In October 2011, corporate partner Mohamed Khodeir moved from Dubai to head the Doha office.
