Rebaza, Alcázar & De Las Casas’ full-time, dedicated team is ‘without doubt, the best in Peru in the area of bankruptcy and restructuring proceedings’ and the ‘value of their work exceeds the costs by far’. At the helm is expert duo Gonzalo De las Casas, a corporate bankruptcy specialist, and José Antonio Jimenez, who shines in private restructurings, insolvency and liquidation proceedings. Daniel Gonzales was made partner. The team is advising a new client of the practice, Graña y Montero, on the negotiation of a private restructuring with various subcontractors (liabilities approximately $53m-$200m) following the government’s termination of GyM’s concession contract to build Peru’s Southern gas pipeline. Other clients of the practice, where ‘the job is always well done’, include: Glencore International, Termochilca and electrical infrastructure construction company, C.A.M.E. Contratistas y Servicios Generales.

Outstanding’ firm Rodrigo, Elías & Medrano – Abogados draws on its top-ranked tax, labour, public law and disputes practices, alongside it’s insolvency and restructuring specialists, to provide distressed companies and creditors with a comprehensive service. It was the preferred choice of Linklaters LLP to provide Peruvian advice to HSBC as one of the main creditors of China Fishery Group (and its Peruvian subsidiaries COPEINCA, CGF Investments and Sustainable Fishing Resources), in their $1bn bankruptcy proceedings. Other mandates include representing Banco Santander Peru in negotiations with Abengoa Perú, the Peruvian subsidiary of Spanish construction giant Abengoa which is undergoing pre-insolvency proceedings in Spain. Department head Guillermo Puelles is a renowned practitioner and is supported by Hugo Silva and Jorge Trelles, who together offer ‘extensive knowledge and experience’. They can also draw on a considerable talent pool at associate level, with a team of nine of whom Sergio Silva stands out for his proven expertise.

Michelle Barclay at CMS Grau brings invaluable Chapter 11 experience to the firm and the Peruvian market, having spent time with the bankruptcy team at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP in New York. She is leading Peruvian advice to William Brandt (Development Specialists) as Chapter 11 Trustee of China Fishery Group (the world’s largest fishery by volume), which has debts of approximately $1bn. The firm provides ‘very good service and expertise’ and continues to counsel Odfjell Terminals Depositos Quimicos Mineros as a creditor in the long-running Doe Run Peru bankruptcy process. Among four hires at associate level this year (and indicative of the busy practice), is Victor Farro, former head of legal at Doe Run and a noteworthy addition to the team.

Corporate finance boutique De Bracamonte - Haaker - Castellares is lauded for its ‘excellent service and professionalism’, ‘comprehensive advice’ and ‘extensive knowledge and experience’, not just in bankruptcy and corporate restructuring, but in associated accounting and finance. It’s expanding practice enjoyed multiple client gains this year, including Ecoexpress Javier Prado, Ingenieros Civiles y Contratistas Generales and Inversiones en Infraestructura de Transportes por Ductos. The team is advising Estratega Consultores as administrator of biofuel company Maple Biocombustibles regarding its $57m bankruptcy proceedings, a matter led by practice head and name partner Gonzalo De Bracamonte, who has ‘great capacity to understand the client and their needs and propose the appropriate solutions’ as well as ‘great intuition to anticipate and prevent contingencies’. His five supporting associates include the ‘vast experience’ of Claudia Oviedo; and Cristina Guardia, who is ‘dedicated and meticulous’.

Martinot Abogados has ‘solid knowledge of Peruvian and international law’ and produces ‘high-quality work’ in this arena. The in-demand team is led by name partner Luis Fernando Martinot, who is ‘intelligent and covers a broad range of areas’ and is supported by corporate and bankruptcy specialist Yanira Becerra. Together they acted for gas distributor CR Group as debtor in the restructuring and refinancing of $18m-worth of debt owed to banks, suppliers and employees. On the creditor side, Martinot and experienced senior associate Karla Paz are advising Compañia Good Year Del Perú in bankruptcy proceedings against various debtors. Client gains this year include Peruvian internet and telecoms company Red Científica Peruana and Roberto Jimenez Tode, former chairman and CEO of two significant mining companies under liquidation.

Miranda & Amado is strong in all areas of insolvency and restructuring under the leadership of specialist Rafael Corzo, who has ‘extensive experience’, particularly in insolvency. He is flanked by of counsel Renzo Agurto, whose areas of expertise include corporate reorganisation, wind-up procedures and liquidations. The firm’s large banking client base lends to a creditor-focused practice, but the six-lawyer team also advises regulated entities and distressed companies, if required. An extensive caseload includes continued advice to mining company Compañía Minera Santa Inés y Morococha (CMSIM) in its $48m claims concerning the insolvent Castrovirreyna Compañía Minera; and representing non-bank, e-money issuer Jupiter Technology Peru in voluntary dissolution and liquidation proceedings. Deutsche Bank Peru is also a client.

Hernández & Cía. Abogados showcases its expertise with its lead role as adviser to Chubb Seguros Peru in the re-profiling of $52m debt held with Graña y Montero, a matter led by Juan Luis Hernández and Jorge Luis Zubiate. The pair also advised Chubb on its $144m debt held with Odebrecht. The firm’s enviable client base includes Banco Internacional del Perú – Interbank, which it represents on an ongoing basis concerning debt refinancing, liquidation matters and bankruptcy procedures.

With ‘profound knowledge of, not just legal issues in general, but those associated with the business’, Muñiz, Olaya, Meléndez, Castro, Ono & Herrera Abogados offers its impressive client base of well-known international companies (both creditors and debtors) a comprehensive restructuring and insolvency service. British American Tobacco del Perú, Pepsi-Cola Panamericana and Citibank Peru are clients, while the firm represents the main creditor, Doe Run Cayman in the long-running bankruptcy proceedings of Doe Run Peru. Guido Muñiz Pujalt heads the team, supported by Gillian Paredes. Senior associate Anthony Lizarraga was formerly at the Specialised Bankruptcy Court of INDECOPI and is consistently recommended.

Philippi Prietocarrizosa Ferrero DU & Uria offers a cross-department service to distressed companies and creditors under the overall guidance of firm director Alfonso Pérez-Bonany, who leads on many of the mandates. The team is providing Peruvian advice to the Hong Kong office of Kirkland & Ellis representing a group of bondholders of China Fishery Group, seeking to recover investments of $500m; and continues to act for Doe Run Peru in its $500m bankruptcy proceedings. Banco Santander Peru, television corporation Andina de Radiodifusión and mining supplier Sandvik del Perú all instruct the firm.
