‘A good firm’, Mersan Abogados fields a seven-strong IP department that has a strong profile for contentious trade mark, copyright, patent and licensing matters, but also handles a steady flow of registration and portfolio management work for a variety of predominately international clients such as British American Tobacco, Sanofi-Aventis, Dolce & Gabbana, Hyundai and Ebay. Hugo Mersán directs the team which includes head of the trade mark and patent group Lorena Mersan.

Under the leadership of Siegfried Vouga, Vouga Abogados demonstrates strong expertise in contentious and non-contentious copyright, trade mark, patent and utility model matters, although the group also has experience in anti-counterfeiting, piracy and competition proceedings. Among a selection of significant mandates, the ‘professional’ Laura Lezcano (who is praised for her ‘industry knowledge’, ‘accuracy and precision’), continues to represent Subway with trade mark opposition proceedings against various applicants that are seeking to register the name Subway in different classes of WIPO’s Nice Classification; and acting on behalf of Universidad Paraguayo Alemana in a dispute with Universidad Politecnica y Artística del Paraguay regarding the trade mark UPA. Other representative clients include Prosegur Paraguay, Equifax and Bridgestone.

The ‘excellent’ nine-strong group at IP boutique Zacarias & Fernández ‘is timely and responsive’ and ‘provides good options and alternatives’ for long-term clients such as Wal-Mart, AstraZeneca, Henkel and Yahoo!.
