HaidermotaBNR is often instructed on the most significant projects in Pakistan. Highlights included advising Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company on the expansion of the open-pit coal mine from a capacity of 3.8MTPA to over 7.5MTPA. In another key matter, it is advising a local government department on various aspects of the construction and commissioning of the Malir Expressway, which will have six interchanges and be the main road connecting the outskirts of the city of Karachi with its centre. Act 2 Wind Power, Eco Trade and Development Bank and Bank Punjab Health Initiative Management Company are also clients. Ali Khan and Umar Shereef are recommended.

The active team at Orr, Dignam & Co. is recommended for its work in the projects and energy sector. Zahir Riaz is leading the advice to Inter State Gas Systems on the $10bn gas pipeline project. Once commissioned, the pipeline is expected to have an initial capacity of 35bn cubic metres and will transport gas from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan and Pakistan to India. In another key matter Asim Nasim has been leading the advice to Pak Arab Refinery on the proposed development of a coastal refinery. Senior partner Maudood Khan and Aliya Yusuf are prominent practitioners.

Qureshi Law Associates has a strong power sector team. Ameena Sohail is leading the advice to a major power company on a 100MW solar power project in Punjab. It also counts Sino Energy Consortium and Hydrochina Dawood as clients. Adnan Aslam Qureshi is another notable practitioner.

RIAA BARKER GILLETTE has an excellent track record of working on major projects. Lahore-based Hasnain Naqvee is leading the advice to Etihad Power Generation on all aspects of the construction and development of a 74.40MW bagasse/coal-based co-generation power plant. This will be one of the largest bagasse-based projects in Pakistan. In other matters, Bilal Shaukat and Nadir Altaf are advising ThalNova Power Thar on the development of a 330MW nine-mouth coal-fired power plant.

Ahmed & Qazi's team is advising clients including China Three Gorges, the Daewoo group and the Government of Sindh on various infrastructure and energy projects across Pakistan. In addition, TBEA Xinjiang SunOasis has engaged the firm to advise it on numerous solar technology projects in the country. Naveed Zafar heads the team.

Ijaz Ahmed & Associates has been busy on several matters of late, including advising a large Pakistani business group on raising investment for its coal-fired power indigenous coal power plant. The team often handles matters relating to oil, gas and mineral exploration, as well as electricity and power generation matters. Kabraji & Talibuddin has an excellent reputation for its project finance work. The skilled team acted as the lender’s local counsel and advised on all the local law issues relating to the 720MW Karot hydropower project. This deal was significant as it is one of the largest foreign investment and infrastructure projects in Pakistan. China Machinery Engineering Corporation and Canadian Solar Construction are also clients. Danish Shah and senior partner Kairas Kabraji are the names to note.

LMA|Ebrahim Hosain is well known for its work on major power projects including coal, LNG and wind power projects. China Gezhoubai Group Investment, Sui Southern Gas and Pakistan LNG Terminals are key clients. The team assisted a foreign law firm with its advice to a Chinese client on the acquisition of a 20% shareholding in a hydel power project in Pakistan. Senior partners Faresa Jafarey Ahsan and Khawaja Hosain are the primary contacts.

Mohsin Tayebaly & Co acts for several major clients on large project financing deals in Pakistan. The team has a strong reputation in the power sector with a particular focus on renewable energy projects. Clients include the Government of Pakistan, China Development Bank, as well as Habib Bank. Irfan Tayebaly and Vaseeq Khalid are well regarded in the field.

ABS & Co. Advocates and Corporate Counsels’ client base includes National Transmission & Dispatch, China Three Gorges South Asia Investment and the Alternate Energy Development Board. Amna Warsi is a key member of the team that is recommended for its work for various public and private sector clients on a range of infrastructure and energy projects.
