Salman Chima and Khalid Ibrahim jointly lead the corporate team at Chima & Ibrahim, which is particularly known for handling shareholder agreement negotiations and transactional matters, among other issues.

The practice group at HaidermotaBNR has expertise in areas including joint ventures, restructurings, privatisations, M&A and public takeovers. The team is currently acting as local counsel to Abraaj Group on the sale of its portfolio company, K-Electric, to Shanghai Electric Power Company; senior partner Khozem Haidermota is leading on the matter.

Mohsin Tayebaly & Co’s three-partner practice group works across the firm’s offices in Karachi and Lahore. Recent highlights saw the team act for NBP Leasing and National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) on the merger of the former company into the bank. Irfan Tayebaly leads the team.

The corporate team at Orr, Dignam & Co. is assisting WPP with its plans to acquire a 70% shareholding in Asiatic Public Relations Network. It also recently advised Anhui Conch Cement through Morrison & Foerster on a potential share purchase agreement in the cement sector. Maudood A Khan, Asim Nasim and Aliya Yusuf are the names to note.

Akhund Forbes is noted for its expertise in M&A transactions, joint ventures and corporate regulatory advice, among other areas. The team’s client base includes DLA Piper Middle East, Arif Habib, Sinotruk Import and Export Company and Bykea Technologies. In one recent highlight, the group advised Fatima Ventures on investments in various start-up companies. Rabel Akhund and Sahar Iqbal are the key names.

The team at Kabraji & Talibuddin is currently assisting Hub Power Company on a joint venture transaction for the establishment of a coal-fired power plant and associated jetty and ancillary facilities. Kairas Kabraji is the key contact.

Past work at Khan & Associates includes acting on behalf of the purchaser in a $2.6bn transaction –the largest corporate acquisition in Pakistan to date. Mansoor Khan is highly regarded.

Acquisition instructions make up the bulk of the team’s workload, with the group predominantly representing the buy-side; for example, it is currently acting for the acquirers of the $78m Suki Kinari hydro-power project. Names to note include firm chairman Liaquat Merchant, as well as Khawaja Hosain and Darakshan Vohra.

RIAA Barker Gillette offers ‘exceptional service’ according to clients, with the team providing a ‘crisp and clean handling of matters’. The team is currently acting as part of a consortium advising the government of Sindh on the establishment of a $1.5bn special economic zone in the province. Bilal Shaukat offers ‘clear timely advice’.

Name partner Badaruddin F Vellani is the key contact for corporate matters at Vellani & Vellani, which is recommended for handling joint ventures and M&A for clients from a broad array of sectors.

Ahmed & Qazi’s ‘well-versed’ corporate team is acting for China Construction Installation Engineering regarding the registration and setting up of a branch office in Karachi as part of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor agreement; Naveed Zafar is leading on the matter.

Cornelius, Lane & Mufti is recommended for its experience in joint ventures and commercial contracts work. The team has seen an increase in transactional activity, most recently advising on the acquisition of a majority stake in an Islamic commercial bank. Munawar-us-Salam and Shehzad Ata Elahi are the names to note.

MJLA Legal’s areas of expertise include M&A and corporate ownership and governance matters. Mujtaba Jamal is the key contact and the team’s client base includes Barclays, Millat Tractors Pakistan, FireEye and General Electric. Maria Farooq moved to Axis Law Chambers at the end of 2016.

Mehmood Mandviwalla is the name to note at Mandviwalla & Zafar, which is highly regarded for its expertise in high-profile M&A transactions and company takeovers.

Qureshi Law Associates’ corporate, commercial and M&A practice is closely aligned to the firm’s projects and energy practice. The team is well known for handling due diligence and advising on shareholders agreements and share purchases in mandates relating to oil, gas and wind power projects, among other areas. Adnan Aslam Qureshi, Ameena Sohail and Zia Junejo are notable practitioners.
