Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP’s Mary Allan is appreciated for her ‘years of experience in Oman, knowledge, and great personality’, and brings her pedigree to a range of infrastructure matters, particularly in the power, electricity and water sectors. Her team recently won a competitive tender for a contract to advise Oman’s government-owned monopoly power purchaser, the Power and Water Procurement Company, on the development of a gas-fired IPP at Musandam.
SNR Denton’s team works throughout the energy value chain, from exploration and production activities, to petrochemicals, power and water, and represents government and government-owned companies as well as oil majors. In addition to advising on an airport expansion for Bechtel, and on a leading refining company’s $1.5bn expansion of the Sohar Refinery, the firm is instructed by BP and Oman Refineries and Petrochemicals Company. The firm also has a specialist engineering and construction practice headed up by David Courtney-Hatcher, who has handled work for Raytheon Canada (in connection with contracts at the new Muscat International Airport project), Oman International and Investment, and Oman Wastewater Services (Haya Water). Ian McGrath is also recommended for his ‘concise and very helpful advice’.
Oil and gas specialist Edward Rose leads the team at Trowers & Hamlins, which continues to carry out work in the upstream sector, including in relation to transfers of interests and the trading of investments. The firm is advising a major oil company on the disposal of part of its interest in Block 57 to a new US-based investor, having previously advised the same client on a comprehensive suite of agreements. Other clients include Maersk Oil, and the consortium of Japan’s Marubeni and Chubu Electric Power and Qatar’s QEWC.
Al Busaidy, Mansoor Jamal & Co acted as local counsel in the sponsorship of a major new power and desalination project in Sohar. The firm is particularly active in the petrochemicals and telecoms sectors. The highly regarded Mansoor Jamal Malik is the main contact.
Led by the experienced Bruce Mullins, DLA Piper Oman LLP continues to handle work for the Government of the Sultanate of Oman; one highlight saw the team advising on a $13bn investment in a major greenfield industrial port developed jointly with Port of Rotterdam.
Said Al-Shahry Law Office is handling an increasing amount of FIDIC-related work, as Oman moves towards international contractual models; for instance, it acted for The GUTech University in Oman, documenting the construction of a university campus on a 500,000sq m greenfield site at Halban. Andrew Kincaid is the main contact.
