Stuart Wardlaw heads the practice at Bond Dickinson LLP, which provides strategic, enforcement and operational advice on a range of matters including Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecutions, compliance with and changes to regulatory frameworks, and health and safety-related judicial review proceedings. The firm’s expertise spans a range of sectors, including retail, where it acts for clients including B&Q; construction, where clients include Network Rail Infrastructure and Babcock International Groupl; manufacturing, where it acts for General Motors; and oil and gas. Wardlaw recently acted alongside associate Francesca Hodgson for Sembcorp Utilities in a health and safety prosecution following a serious injury to the employee of a sub-contractor. Wardlaw and Hodgson also represented Vertellus Specialities in an investigation following a serious fire at the client’s Seal Sands site.

At Clyde & Co LLP, James Thompson advises clients on the full range of corporate crime matters, including assisting directors accused of manslaughter, handling risk compliance, and representing clients in inquests and investigations. He has substantial expertise in the healthcare, retail, manufacturing and chemical industries, where his clients include both public and private sector entities. Past work includes advising a railway company on a criminal investigation following the death of an employee, and acting for a care home company in an inquest.

At Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP, Newcastle-based Tim Hill regularly acts for high hazard energy, chemical and manufacturing clients. Recent highlights include representing FMC Technologies in a HSE investigation and subsequent prosecution following a pressure release accident, which led to the amputation of an employee’s arm, and acting for McCain Foods in a HSE prosecution relating to a serious arm injury caused when an employee became tangled in a conveyor belt. Other clients include Siemens, Tarmac Trading and Parker Hannifin.

Hay & Kilner fields a ‘high-class and very capable’ team that represents regulators and defends individuals and companies in prosecutions. ‘Efficient, thorough and knowledgeable’ practice head Jonathan Pigford attracts praise for his prosecution expertise, which encompasses prosecutions regarding regulatory omissions and those resulting from fatalities. Pigford, who primarily focuses on criminal defence, has acted on fatal and major injury cases and has represented clients in investigations by the Care Quality Commission, the Environment Agency and the HSE.

Ward Hadaway’s practice is headed by regulatory crime specialist Stephen Graham, who has notable contentious experience and assists clients in investigations by the HSE, the Environment Agency and the Financial Services Agencies. The team acts fpr a range of companies and local authorities, including North Yorkshire County Council and Sherburn Stone. Licensing specialist Richard Arnot is recommended for his regulatory investigations expertise.
