Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP handles a wide range of contentious and non-contentious health and safety work spanning regulatory compliance, investigations and enforcement matters. Leeds-based Kevin Elliott heads the team, which includes Tim Hill, who is the main contact for Newcastle. Hill acts for clients in the chemical, energy, construction, pharmaceutical and manufacturing sectors, advising on Competent Authority inspections and investigations alongside corporate and personal liability issues. In recent work, he assisted Greencore Grocery with police and HSE investigations following a contractor’s fatality, and acted alongside colleagues from the Leeds office for AGC Chemicals Europe in HSE investigations and the subsequent prosecution following allegations that poor quality pipework caused chemical burn injuries to a worker.

Womble Bond Dickinson (UK) LLP handles the full spectrum of contentious and non-contentious health and safety work: it provides clients with corporate governance advice, assists organisations with health and safety issues relating to international operations, supply chain management risks and the standardisation of procedures, and deals with investigations and prosecutions brought by HSE and other enforcement bodies. Main contact Stuart Wardlaw advised Vertellus Specialities UK on an investigation into potential breaches of health and safety legislation including the COMAH regulations following a fire at its Seal Sands site, while Sembcorp Utilities, an energy, water and marine group, retained the practice to advise on a health and safety prosecution following a sub contractor’s employee suffering serious injuries during a hydraulic pressure test of a boiler at the client’s site. As well as its energy sector expertise, the team’s client base also includes a number on construction, retail, manufacturing and transport industry players.

Ward Hadaway has particular expertise representing individuals, companies, county councils and NHS trusts in various health and safety investigations by the HSE, the Environment Agency, Trading Standards, Financial Services Agencies and the police. The team led by Stephen Graham represented a multi-national corporation in an investigation and prosecution following a serious electrocution incident on its site, and acted for a large construction organisation in proceedings brought by the Environment Agency with regards to the illegal escape of water from its site. Richard Arnot is adept at handling food safety work and represents clients before magistrates courts in matters pertaining to food labelling, food hygiene, sell-by date prosecutions and underage sales.
