AKD has a strong reputation for owner-side representation in the shipping sector, but also regularly acts for charterers and sub-charterers, and covers a broad spectrum of work across the transport sector. Haco van der Houven van Oordt and Frans de Vries Lentsch are recommended for their ‘business acumen, industry knowledge and response times’.

Transport, trade and insurance boutique Van Traa Advocaten advises on and litigates logistics matters, but is best known for collision, salvage and general average cases, as well as ship arrests. Clients include KLM, Philips, DHL, AIG and Fortis.

Boonk Van Leeuwen’s Herman Boonk has specialised in maritime and transport cases since 1978, while Johan Smit regularly handles a significant amount of shipbuilding and repair work for a number of shipyards via the Dutch shipbuilding industry association.

The comprehensive, transportation team at De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek represents clients such as Dutch Air Traffic, Martinair, and Boeing. The firm also has a longstanding relationship with Dutch Railways, and recently advised the Municipality of Amsterdam on the financing and purchase of hundreds of subway cars.Berend Crans heads the practice and is an aircraft finance expert.

Allen & Overy LLP’s Willem van Baren was instructed by Turkish Airlines and its insurers to handle matters arising from the Boeing 737 crash at Schipol Airport in 2009, and advised on the sale of four ex-KLM Boeing 737 aircraft.

Cox Ten Bruggencate Advocaten represents Aon, Willis, Delta Lloyd, and DSV. The group has been advising the liability underwriters of a Dutch heavy lifting and transport company on damages claims totalling $6bn.

Two-partner firm DKM Advokaten houses a practice that covers the carriage of goods by air, road, sea, rail and inland waterways, as well as maritime law more broadly. The group represents Fortis, Air France and Marsh.

Kneppelhout & Korthals NV continued to build its practice through a merger with Padberg Spanjaart. Clients include Daily Fresh Logistics, Base Logistics and Verenigde Tankrederij.

Loyens & Loeff’s Maurice Essers advised Siemens on bids for contracts relating to vehicles and systems for the Amsterdam Metro, while André van der Kolk acted for Stadsregio Arnhem Nijmegen, Stadsgewest Haaglanden and the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe on bus concessions and rail-related matters.

NautaDutilh regularly advises on finance transactions in the transport sector, and has a particularly strong reputation for ship finance. Highlights included acting for Rabobank on newbuild financing, and on the leasing of the CBC aircraft fleet. Erik Geerling’s team offers ‘excellent service’.

Van Steenderen Mainport Lawyers is noted for its ship finance, mega yachts, shipbuilding, and wet and dry maritime work. Jasper Groen, Arnold van Steenderen and Marieke van den Dool are recommended.

Wiersma Van Campen Vos’s lawyers ‘are quick, to-the-point and understand the needs of the industry’. Taco Wiersma and Reinier van Campen are ‘excellent lawyers on maritime and trade law’, while Aram Vos is a ‘very good all-rounder, who is responsive to client needs’. The team ‘knows all there is to know about trade or ship finance in the Netherlands, and is trusted with multimillion-pound disputes’.
