Counsel in these lists have been appointed by the Attorney General to advise or represent the government in court. Members of the panels do not work exclusively for government departments, and are free to take other work as long as it does not conflict with government duties. Appointment to the Treasury Panel is highly prestigious, and the work is usually interesting and important. It also helps when applications for silk are made, but rates are lower than for commercial work. In recent years the tables have been formalised into A, B and C lists, reflecting various degrees of seniority.
