The Legal 500

Libya > Legal market overview

Ravaged by civil war for most of the year, it is unsurprising that transactional activity in Libya has been limited. Indeed, the majority of law firms were unable to carry out much serious work between February and October 2011.

Most of the key local legal practices resumed operations in late 2011, with many law firms expecting there to be an urgent need for legal services as soon as the security situation is under control. It is expected that Libya’s new government will honour energy contracts granted legally during Muammar Gaddafi’s rule.

International practices have frequently been involved in Libya-related deals. Local practice Tumi Law Firm enjoys an association with SNR Denton. Baker & McKenzie LLP, Herbert Smith LLP and Eversheds LLP have also acted on significant Libyan projects.

At Stephenson Harwood, group head Kamal Shah has been growing the firm’s practice in Africa, working across the banking, construction, energy, mineral, rail, shipping, and telecommunications sectors. Commercial litigation and arbitration partner Paul Phillips specialises in areas such as aviation and regularly works with entities in Libya.
