Cobalt’s ‘knowledgeable and experienced team’ handles a comprehensive range of matters including syndicated lending, acquisition finance and securities. ‘Adaptable’ special counsel Andrejs Lielkalns advised DNB on the complex regulatory aspects of its merger with Nordea, while fellow special counsel Edgars Lodzins assisted Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, and Société Générale with a dual-tranche eurobond issuance by the Republic of Latvia. Managing partner Lauris Liepa and Girts Lejiņs head the group. New clients include AIG and UniCredit Finance.

Among the best firms’ in the finance space, Ellex specialises in project financing and alternative investment funds. The ‘reactive and knowledgeable’ group is led by practice head Egons Piķelis; he advised DVB Bank, HSH Nordbank and Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken on a $121m refinancing loan for Latvian Shipping, and alongside Ēriks Blumbergs and Valters Diure he provided assistance to European Investment Bank and Nordic Investment Bank on €195m-worth of parallel loans for an infrastructure project. Other clients include Goldman Sachs and Providence Capital.

Eversheds Sutherland Bitāns offers a blend of banking, securities and capital markets expertise to a notable international corporate client base. It has been instructed on a number of equity raisings, and assisted Bank Citadele on a €40m unsecured subordinated bond issuance and on the subsequent listing of the bonds. Māris Vainovskis, whose expertise extends to debt restructuring, commodities and securities law, led the team advising Latvian Shipping on a secondary fund raising via a new share issue.

Sorainen excels in private equity, securities and regulatory matters and has particular expertise in credit portfolio transactions. It provides ‘spot-on judgement’ and, led by department head Rūdolfs Eņģelis, advised Nordea Bank on combining its operations with DNB in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and continues to assist the Nasdaq on restructuring and consolidating its central securities depositories. Other key clients include Providence Equity and AIG Europe.

TGS Baltic is a substantial group that ‘not only provides value for money but is also highly transparent’ and acts for a range of financial institutions as well as venture capital and other funds. The ‘truly excellent and knowledgeableInese Hazenfusa counts the European Central Bank and ABN Amro among her clients, and senior associate Alise Eljašāne is ‘a very experienced professional in financial instrument law and is well connected with the FCMC regulators’.

BDO Law focuses on alternative investment funds, handling a range of contentious cases, especially for asset management companies, while offering ‘high-level service in terms of response times’. Managing partner Vita Liberte acted for Altum in three complex cases concerning disputes with the previous shareholders of Parex Bank (now Bank Citadele). Other clients include Baltic Asset Management and Astrum.

At Fort, lead partner Ramona Miglāne and senior associate Edgars Turlajs serve an impressive range of venture capital and fintech clients; they assisted the Association of Alternative Financial Services of Latvia before the Ministry of Finance in drafting new peer-to-peer lending and on amendments to the prevention of money laundering laws. The team also acted on crowdfunding and cryptocurrency matters.

Kronbergs Čukste Derling has ‘an excellent understanding of the legal issues related to innovative financial services’. It counts insurance and transportation companies among its clients in addition to a range of financial institutions; new clients in this space include Fundwise and Fincredit. Valters Kronbergs, who heads the team, and senior partner Vineta Čukste-Jurjeva assisted 4finance Holdings on the expansion of its operations in numerous jurisdictions.

At Leadell Fogels, Vitols & Paipa, managing partner Kārlis Vītols senior associate Ilze Jankeviča are ‘able to promptly advise and formulate strong opinions on even controversial legal questions’. They are key contacts for banking, finance and debt restructuring and recovery. Swedbank, Altum and DNB are some of the group’s established clients.

Primus, Attorneys at Law advised Jyske Bank on various mortgage and loan agreements and is also acting for DNB on numerous contentious cases, including debt recovery and restructuring. Kristīne Gaigule-Šāvēja and Sintija Radionova head the department.
