Cobalt handles the full range of banking and finance matters, including securities, corporate bonds and acquisition finance. Specialist counsel Andrejs Lielkalns assisted Bank of Ireland, Danske Bank, GE Corporate Finance Bank, Natixis and Nordea with the syndicated financing of European Cinema Holdings II’s acquisition of Nordic Cinema Group, and securitised Target Group’s Latvian assets, while fellow specialist counsel Edgars Lodzins advised 4finance on issuing five-year corporate bonds totalling €100m. Managing partner Lauris Liepa and Girts Lejins head the group, whose new clients include AIG, Expobank and UniCredit Finance.

As well as regulatory advice and trade finance work, Ellex excels in alternative investment funds and cross-border financial transactions. It has been advising Altum on establishing funds and assisted ABN AMRO Bank with a secured multicurrency revolving credit facility for an oil trading corporation. Other clients include Goldman Sachs and the International Capital Market Association. Practice head Egons Piķelisprovides solid, consistent, high-calibre advice’ and senior attorney Eleonora Zelmene – who leads the insurance practice – has ‘great understanding of regulatory frameworks’. Ēriks Blumbergs and Raivis Leimanis are key names from the former Glimstedt & Partners team.

Eversheds Sutherland Bitans recently led HansaMatrix’s IPO and Nasdaq listing. Porta Finance and Swedbank are key clients of the wider practice, and senior partner Māris Vainovskis has ‘profound experience’ in debt restructuring, securities and asset finance. He heads the department alongside of counsel Baiba Strupiša, who joined from her own firm. Ģirts Rūda is highly regarded.

Sorainen provides ‘highly professional’ advice on securities, private equity and liquidation, as well as acquisition financing and regulatory matters. Department head Rūdolfs Eņģelis is part of a pan-Baltic team which is advising Nasdaq on restructuring and consolidating its central securities depositories. Eņģelis also led Nordea’s sale of its merchant-acquiring business to Nets Holding. Other clients include Deutsche Bank and Balta Group.

TGS Baltic’s practice head Inese Hazenfusa provides ‘a pragmatic and well-tailored service’, and advised new client European Central Bank on revoking Trasta komercbanka’s licence. Other client gains include Norvik Banka and INVL Asset Management. Senior associate Alise Eljašāne, who joined from Law Firm Varul, has experience in alternative investment funds, asset management and capital markets. Andra Rubene is also recommended. Senior associates Māris Liguts and Ivita Samlaja joined Deloitte Legal.

BDO Law has strength in capital markets and funds work. Managing partner Vita Liberte assisted NORVIK Ieguldījumu pārvaldes sabiedrība with registering Norvik Eurasia AIF as an alternative investment, which was established as a joint stock company.

Fort’s Ramona Miglāne has experience in peer-to-peer lending and crowdfunding platforms. The practice is handling various matters for ExpressCredit, including launching a consumer lending service and registering with the Financial and Capital Market Commission (FCMC) as a payment institution. Senior associate Edgars Turlajs is also recommended.

Valters Kronbergs and Vineta Čukste-Jurjeva are the practice co-heads at Kronbergs Cukste Derling, which covers matters such as consumer finance, liquidation and contentious financial and insurance work. Kronbergs is advising the FCMC on VEF Banka’s ongoing liquidation. 4finance and Jotunfjell Partners are clients.

Leadell Fogels, Vitols & Paipa handles debt recovery for Altum and DNB banka. Managing partner Kārlis Vītols and senior associate Ilze Jankeviča are ‘real experts’.

Primus, Attorneys at Law is ‘highly recommendable’. It has been advising DNB banka on loan restructurings and represented the client in debt recovery and mortgage disputes. The key figures are Sintija Radionova, Kristīne Gaigule-Šāvēja and senior associate Dagnis Posums.

Vilgerts’ workload included advising on loans, insurance sector M&A and representing clients in claims against banks. Gints Vilgerts acted for Luent Systems in recovering funds frozen by Nordea Bank Danmark and advised BPM Capital on financing a management buyout.
