Considered a ‘market leader’ in power matters, Anjarwalla & Khanna has diversified its practice and now also handles a large number of traditional and social infrastructure projects and public-private partnership (PPP) initiatives. The group is increasingly active in renewable energy projects outside of Kenya and advised African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), Craftskills Wind Energy International and IFC Infraventures as the sponsors of a 100MW wind powered generation facility in Kipeto, the second largest wind project in Kenya. Hamilton Harrison & Mathews is at the forefront of infrastructure and PPP projects with a large number of engagements coming from government entities and other developers. It has advised the Kenya National Highways Authority on the tender process for several PPP projects, including the construction of the Ngong-Kiserian– Isinya (D523) and Kajiado–Mashuru-Isara (D524) Roads. Top-notch’, ‘proactiveIseme, Kamau & Maema Advocates is an established leader in energy and infrastructure projects that ‘goes over and above expectations’ and is praised for its ‘holistic’ approach. It represents a variety of lenders and developers while maintaining strong relationships with domestic regulators. Recently, the group advised the County Government of Nakuru and the World Bank on a solid waste management PPP project and represented KTDA Power on the financing and development of four run-of-river hydropower projects. James Kamau is ‘seasoned and respected’, ‘sees the bigger picture’ and ‘has a reputation for facilitating transactions rather than hindering them’. Kaplan & Stratton Advocates is a strong player in renewable energy, including solar and geothermal projects, advising a number of major international sponsors. The firm represented Gogar 1 Solar Park in the development of a 50MW solar energy project, one of the first in Kenya. In the infrastructure space, the firm advised Power China International Group, in its role as project sponsor, on the development of the Illasit-Njukiri-Taveta toll road project. Team head Kenneth Kamaitha is noted for the structuring of renewable energy project documents and is supported by experienced figures Sam Wainaina and Nigel Shaw.

Walker Kontos Advocates is a leader in renewable energy and is making a further impression in road and rail infrastructure projects. The firm has a mix of lender and sponsor/developer engagements with clients such as Enel Green Power, Green Africa Power, Martifer Solar Investment, IFC, African Development Bank, and ABSA. Michael Kontos, Peter Mwangi, Rahma Karanja and Diana Situma form an impressive senior team.

Prof. Albert Mumma & Company Advocates is a renowned figure in infrastructure projects. The team is acting for Kenya Railways on the operation and maintenance contract between China Road and Bridge Corporation and Kenya Railways for the operation and management of the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway. Albert Mumma is highly recommended.

Bowmans is best known for road and rail projects. The Nairobi office has leveraged the expertise of colleagues in South Africa and now receives numerous referrals from overseas law firms and engagements from development finance institutions, Chinese developers and local contractors. On the power side, the firm assisted Xago Africa with the development of a 40MW solar plant in Siaya Kenya. Njau Mukuha, Paras Shah and Rainbow Field are key members of the team.

Mboya Wangong'u & Waiyaki Advocates has an active practice in renewable energy, including hydropower, solar, geothermal and biomass projects.
