Dentons Hamilton Harrison & Mathews continues to operate at the top of the market in constitutional and judicial review cases; it has appeared in a series of banking sector judicial review disputes. Procurement, employment and tax disputes are also a recent forte for the team, which includes the seasoned Kenneth Fraser, who delivers 'innovative arguments' and 'pays attention to detail', while the 'very thorough' Kiragu Kimani and employment litigation leader Michi Kirimi are also key names. The team defended Kenya Power & Lighting Company against a petition alleging the imposition of illegal and backdated electricity bills on electricity consumers.

Kaplan & Stratton Advocates is a market leader across the board and is especially noted for procurement, tax and employment disputes, and for arbitration. The large team features a number of senior names including Fred Ojiambo, Peter Gachuhi, Nazima Malik, James Muthui, Cosima Wetende, Esther Kinyenje and Peter Njeru. The team acted for Kenya Commercial Bank Pension Fund in a precedent-setting case involving a claim that the fund's computation was erroneous and grossly undervalued the retirement benefits.

Oraro & Company Advocates is founded on dispute resolution strength and is frequently involved in headline insolvency and restructuring cases, tax disputes and international arbitrations. George Oraro and Chacha Odera are market leaders, while Walter Amoko is another rounded litigator. The team acted for Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation in the recovery of $200m from a debtor.

Anjarwalla & Khanna's team is 'very approachable and has a friendly but professional approach', 'is always available' and, according to one client, 'is open and honest and will guide you through the decision-making process'. It is a leader in anti-corruption and white-collar crime investigations, and also represents a multitude of large Kenyan corporates and multinationals in domestic and cross-border litigations and arbitrations. It acted for Heineken in a dispute concerning the termination of distribution agreements, where the distributors had obtained an interim injunction to stop the termination, with the Court of Appeal eventually staying the execution of the injunction orders. Aisha Abdallah has an outstanding reputation. Forensic investigator Willie Oelofse has joined from Deloitte East Africa. Senior associate Mohamed Karega is also highly rated.

Bowmans is at the forefront of restructuring and insolvency matters, including related contentious proceedings. It has also seen growth in tax cases, trade mark disputes, general commercial litigation and shareholder disputes. Evans Monari is the senior litigator in the team, while Anthony Njogu and Terry Mwango have earned market recognition through a series of headline cases. Njogu was the lead dispute resolution partner in successfully defending Kenya Airways' unprecedented scheme of arrangement restructuring in the Court of Appeal.

At Iseme, Kamau & Maema Advocates, 'senior partners are readily accessible and willing to put in the extra hours to meet demanding deadlines' and 'legal opinions are thorough'. The group is operating at the forefront of procurement and constitutional-related litigation and has a burgeoning presence in international arbitration. It has a tremendous record in Supreme Court proceedings and is also making an impression in employment cases and trusts and estates disputes. It represented the Republic of Kenya in ICSID investment arbitration proceedings filed by Cortec Mining Kenya and is leveraging its association with DLA Piper to develop its skills in international arbitration.The team has 'highly skilled counsels with very strong negotiation and interpersonal skills', and is 'first class at understanding complex legal risks and coming up with solutions that are commercially viable and acceptable to all parties'. The prominent Kamau Karori heads the department, which includes the experienced Martin Munyu.

TripleOKlaw Advocates is founded on dispute resolution with a fine record in both litigation and arbitration. The firm has a number of impressive advocates and continues to impress in constitutional cases, environmental disputes and international arbitration. John Ohaga is praised for his commitment to the arbitration scene, while James Uduol and Elias Masika are also highly reputed.

Daly & Inamdar Advocates has an impressive mix of litigation and arbitration engagements. It has built an especially strong record in employment, procurement, medical negligence and insolvency cases. Samir Inamdar is noted for procurement, medical negligence and maritime cases, while George Muchiri and Kananu Mutea are also key members of the team.

MMAN Advocates remains noted for tax litigation and arbitration, and continues to build its standing in insolvency and restructuring cases. The firm acted for Icici Bank in the contested receivership of Karuturi, the horticultural and flower company. Jomo Nyaribo is the lead partner.

Mohammed Muigai Advocates delivers 'excellent work especially in criminal and procurement disputes'. It continues to be recognised for its expertise in administrative and constitutional law cases. Mohammed Nyaoga is a prominent advocate in public procurement disputes, while Geoffrey Imende is similarly highly regarded for judicial review and procurement matters.

Walker Kontos Advocates has acted in some of the biggest insolvency cases of recent years and has earned roles on a series of arbitration-related court proceedings. The team acted for Equity Bank in a breach of contract claim against the County Government of Narok. Gregory Karungo and Paul Ogunde are the key partners.

MMC Africa Law has made an impression in the litigation environment with Peter Murage and Daniel Musyoka being especially experienced practitioners.
