Dentons' energy and natural resources team is experienced in mineral and oil and gas projects, and advises major petroleum and mining companies on contracts and regulatory compliance. Aigoul Kenjebayeva is a veteran of the oil and gas sector; she advised Russian energy corporation PAO Lukoil on a $270m investment into exploration of the Caspian Sea alongside KazMunaiGas. Birzhan Zharasbayev advised Agip Karachaganakon a complex PPA arrangement with the Ministry of Energy. Senior associate Ruslan Nurbekov focuses on the commercial aspects of energy projects.

GRATA International handles matters across the full energy and natural resources spectrum, including renewables. Natural resources specialist Baizhan Bekzhanov advised Xingling Petroleum on the acquisition of Kazakh oil deposits. He also advised Sinopec Engineering on the $1.2bn EPC contract for modernisation of the Atyrau Refinery, one of the largest in Central Asia. Almat Daumov has notable expertise in the mining industry and acted for Brendt on the $10m construction of a gold production facility. Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP  advises on joint ventures, project finance, procurement and regulatory approval. Clients are 'impressed by the attitude and behaviour of the team', which has 'good expertise and deep knowledge on these matters'. Aset Shyngyssov divides his time between the Nur-Sultan and Almaty offices, and recently acted for a mining client in the $295m construction of an enrichment factory financed by the EBRD. Marat Mukhamediyev, who was recently promoted to senior associate, assisted Shyngyssov in advising Italian state-controlled energy corporation Eni SpA on a new wind-power project in Kazakhstan. The team was boosted by four new hires, including associate Karina Ilyussizova, who supported on the aforementioned wind-power project.

Energy and natural resources matters are the focus of Unicase Law Firm, which is active in both the traditional and renewable energy fields as well as minerals. Raushana Chaltabayeva advised Risen Energy on its acquisition of 100% of a solar energy company. Senior associate Dariya Saginova, who recently joined from PricewaterhouseCoopers Tax & Advisory LLP, has advised on state development of renewable energy projects.

Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP's lawyers 'do an excellent job' and are noted by clients as 'knowledgeable, courteous and friendly'. The firm primarily acts on high-value disputes and transactions in the energy sector on behalf of the state. Clients find Askar Moukhitdinov 'easy to work with'.

Dechert Kazakhstan Limited's energy team advises foreign and domestic clients with matters exclusively in the oil and gas sector. Victor Mokrousov leads the practice and continues to advise Trans-Asia Gas Pipeline on the operation of two major pipelines in Kazakhstan, providing legal advice on procurement, employment and licensing.

Deloitte TCF, LLP provides advice on corporate, tax and licensing relating to large energy projects, with notable highlights in both the renewable and oil and gas sectors. Agaisha Ibrasheva is the key contact.

Integrites advises clients on M&A, corporate and project finance, and licensing permits. The firm made three hires from PricewaterhouseCoopers Tax & Advisory LLP, including finance partner Rashid Gaissin. Practice head Svetlana Shtopol advised Altynor Mining on gold exploration and production issues.

The team at Kinstellar LLP provides legal advice on general corporate matters and regulatory issues in the natural resources sector. Of counsel Almas Zhaiylgan is head of the practice.

Olympex Advisers LLP handles subsurface resources work and regularly advises the state in legislative drafting. Diyar Yereshev is highly respected in this field.

SIGNUM Law Firm's main focus in this area is litigation in the subsoil use sector, as well as negotiating with the state on behalf of foreign investors for regulatory approval. Managing partner Sofiya Zhylkaidarova advised a client on gaining the extension of two oilfield concession agreements from the Ministry of Energy.
