Dechert Kazakhstan Limited often handles acquisitions for large Kazakh businesses. Victor Mokrousov has been advising Kazkommertsbank on a range of ongoing matters after its purchase of BTA Bank.

Linkage & Mind LLP is ‘proactive and experienced in M&A deals’. Aizhan Karzhaubayeva and Madina Sypatayevahave strong knowledge of corporate and government-related matters’; they recently advised Samruk-Energy on the sale of stakes in two energy companies.

Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP’s Aset Shyngyssov and Bakhytzhan Kadyrov often represent local and international clients in M&A. In addition to energy sector deals, the pair advised Alstom on its purchase of 25% of TOO EKZ.

Reed Smith LLP advises a range of state-linked and private sector companies on dealings with international businesses. Askar Zhansagimov advised Kazatomprom on increasing its equity participation in its joint venture with Cameco Corporation.

Sayat Zholshy & Partners has ‘a profound knowledge of competition law, market trends and enforcement practices’. Recent highlights include advising Teva on the competition law aspects of its purchase of Allergan Generics. Arman Berdalin heads the practice, for which other work includes handling M&A and joint ventures.

Signum Law Firm advises clients on cross-border M&A, joint ventures and other corporate matters, such as Liza Zhumakhmetova assisting a European company with a proposed inbound investment. Managing partner Sofiya Zhylkaidarova is ‘creative in finding solutions’.

Unicase Law Firm has ‘a deep understanding of the legal aspects of business processes’. Artem Timoshenko advised Halliburton on its acquisition of Baker Hughes; commercial law expert Saniya Toleshova focuses on commercial work.

White & Case Kazakhstan LLP has experience of deals in the banking and minerals sectors. Maxim Telemtayev and Pavel Kornilov advised Eurasian Bank on its merger with BankPozitif Kazakhstan.

Deloitte TCF, LLP is ‘well known for its level of expertise and client-oriented approach’. Agaisha Ibrasheva heads the practice, which handles M&A deals as well as corporate, human resources and tax matters.

Eterna Law handles cross-border acquisitions, as well as corporate matters and competition law, Maksym Uslytstyi leads the team in Almaty, which often works in conjunction with colleagues in Kiev.

Grata International handles corporate work, M&A and employment law matters, in addition to which Bolat Miyatov routinely advises a major telecoms player on competition law.

Integrites advises on commercial, employment and corporate matters, such as joint ventures. Clients include Alel Agro, which Kurmangazy Talzhanov and Svetlana Shtopol advised on a partial sale to a Singaporean investment fund.

KPMG Tax and Advisory LLC’s Rustem Sadykov handles acquisitions, corporate matters and employment law. Clients include international investors and major oil companies.

Michael Wilson & Partners, Ltd.’s team is ‘professional, responsive and knowledgeable of local issues’. Michael Wilson and Elena Lee advised Falck on its divestment of Open Clinic; Assel Kulisheva is also a name to note.

Oryngazy Jaboldinov heads the corporate department at Nazkhanov and Partners, which recently advised on shareholder relations and M&A. Clients include KazTransGasAimak.

Olympex Advisers LLP handles corporate matters, with a particular strength in corporate governance. Clients include KazTransOil, which Yessen Massalin advises on leadership matters following its IPO.

PricewaterhouseCoopers Tax & Advisory LLP advises a range of international clients on corporate issues. New practice head Rashid Gaissin routinely advises Unipharm on commercial matters and has assisted various clients with transactional due diligence mandates.

Synergy Partners Law Firm LLC’s key figures Alzhan Stamkulov and Nurzhan Stamkulov advised an investor on the purchase of 9% of ChocoFamily Holding, one of Kazakhstan’s leading online retailers.

Verum’s Azamat Chinetov advises Alcatel-Lucent on its commercial, employment and tax needs, in addition to working for clients in the energy sector; he is qualified in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

At Attorneys Group Zanger/Zan Hub LLP, Madiyar Bekturganov and Aituar Madin recently advised Marubeni on a merger of joint venture companies. Other work includes energy and public procurement mandates.
