Bedell Cristin advised the trustees in relation to the establishment of a series of trusts for an ultra-high-net-worth European family. Edward Bennett , Zillah Howard and Alan Dart are key contacts. Henry Wickham joined from Lawrence Graham LLP, while Mason Birbeck left for Collas Crill. James Campbell is highly rated.

Carey Olsen advised Royal Bank of Canada Trustees (Channel Islands), as trustee, in response to a complex application for directions and disclosure concerning a substantial employee benefit trust. Paul Matthams is recommended on the non-contentious side, and Robert MacRae is ‘superb in court’. Siobhan Riley ‘gives excellent advice’.

Mourant Ozannes advises on around 1,000 trusts per year. It is experienced in non-contentious trust/foundations drafting in Jersey, and especially noted for trust litigation mandates. The team advised on the first Jersey foundation for private, purpose and charitable uses. Giles Corbin has ‘excellent knowledge’, and Jonathan Speck ‘clearly has the ear of the court’. Former Chancery barrister Douglas Close joined the firm’s London office from Serle Court.

Recommended for ‘high-value, bespoke structuring’, Ogier’s ‘advice is concise and practical, as well as prompt’. The firm has a leading non-contentious trust team in Jersey, and assisted with foundations established for clients. The practice also works closely with the firm’s litigation team. Steve Meiklejohn is ‘outstanding’, and Sally Edwards is ‘practical and easy to work with’.

Appleby advises on all aspects of trust law, including the establishment, restructuring and winding-up of private, charitable, purpose and commercial trusts. The team also assists with foundations, and works closely with the firm’s trust litigators. Naomi Rive is the practice head, and Marc Guillaume is also a key contact.

Collas Crill welcomed the arrival of Mason Birbeck from Bedell Cristin. The practice assists high-net-worth clients with complex wealth planning, and is noted for its drafting and implementation of foundation structures. It also has an experienced trust disputes team. David Dorgan ‘provides guidance on a broad spectrum of fiduciary matters with a professional and pragmatic approach’. Sadly, advocate Richard Pirie passed away in January 2012.

Baker & Partners acts in complex contentious trust matters. The team represented the trustee in a dispute concerning the validity of instruments appointing beneficiaries and appointing substantial sums to those beneficiaries. David Wilson is highly rated, and Stephen Baker ‘possesses extremely strong advocacy skills’.

Sinels advised the beneficiaries of a Jersey law trust in asset protection and tax planning matters in light of foreign revenue schemes and forced heirship laws. Philip Sinel and Matthew Godden are the key contacts.
