Clifford Chance Law Officedelivers top-quality work’ across all financial products. Leng-Fong Lai is ‘superb’ and provides expertise in asset-backed finance (ABS), securitisation, over-the-counter derivatives and bonds. Office managing partner Eiichi Kanda is noted for securitisation and structured finance, and Reiko Sakimura provides expertise in convertible bonds and medium-term notes (MTN). Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank and Morgan Stanley feature on the client list. Yasuko Moriwaki was promoted to counsel.

Linklaters is strong in the derivatives space and is Japanese counsel to the International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA) and to ISDA’s Credit Derivatives Japan Determinations Committee. The ‘leading’ practice advised ISDA on its negotiations with Japan’s Financial Services Agenc, regarding margin requirements for non-centrally cleared derivatives. Gavin Raftery and Masato Honma advised Volkswagen Financial Services Japan on issuing its fifth auto-ABS transaction under the auto loan securitisation platform Driver Japan five. Seishi Ikeda excels in real estate securitisation, and Toshio Shimada and Akiko Hosokawa are also active.

At Jones Day, securitisation expert Hirokazu Ina undertook a large volume of work in the shipping sector. Idemitsu Kosan, JBIC and IBJ Leasing Company feature on the client roster.

Seiji Matsuzoe, the main contact at White & Case LLP – White & Case Law Offices (Registered Association), is experienced in CDOs, credit-linked and warrant-backed loans and other structured products, as well as securitisation transactions, derivatives and acquisition finance. He advised LCH.Clearnet on obtaining a central counterparty licence to launch its SwapClear business in Japan. Norifusa Hashimoto, Aya Kurahashi and Eiichi Nagai left the firm to establish Kaynex Law Offices.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer advised Shinsei Bank on its purchase, holding and disposal of notes issued by a Hong Kong REIT under the bank’s MTN programme. Shinsuke Kobayashi and Tomoko Nakajima are highly recommended at counsel level. Don Stokes now works out of the Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City offices.

Sidley Austin Nishikawa Foreign Law Joint Enterprise leverages its global network in handling cross-border securitisations and establishing security interests in domestic assets. Tomoo Nishikawa advises financial institutions, airlines and film companies on structured finance transactions. Akira Nakazawa’s workload includes timeshare loan securitisation and asset finance.
