Studio Professionale Associato a Baker & McKenzie’s ‘excellent’ and ‘extremely goal-oriented’ team has particular clout in the technology sector, but also delivers ‘high-quality solutions’ for blue-chip clients in the telecoms and media industry. The group continues to provide media law advice to Sky Italia and has been advising Iridium Satellite on regulatory telecoms issues; it is increasingly active for numerous international television channels. Lorenzo de Martinis, Raffaele Giarda and Francesca Gaudino are all recommended.

Excellent in every aspect’, Hogan Lovells Studio Legale’s TMT team has ‘impressive industry knowledge’ combined with the ‘great ability to prioritise and understand urgencies’. In recent highlight work, the ‘outstandingMarco Berliri assisted Fonderie Digitali with the launch of a 3D printer for smartphones and successfully represented TripAdvisor in an appeal against a €500,000 fine imposed by the ICA related to unfair commercial practices. The group also acts for eBay, Facebook, Google and YouTube.

As ‘one of the best practices’ in the TMT arena, Portolano Cavallo’s ‘top-level’ team shows ‘business acumen and deep industry knowledge’; it advises domestic and international clients on the full spectrum of regulatory, transactional and contentious matters. Ernesto Apa and Francesco Portolano are ‘top-notch lawyers’ along with Laura Liguori, who is ‘wonderful and gives clear advice’.

DLA Piper’s ‘very strong team’ often advises clients at the interface between media and technology matters, where it is ‘proactive in analysing industry trends and their legal impacts’. ‘Expert lawyer’ Giangiacomo Olivi recently advised Kering on two large business process outsourcings and assisted Viacom with the acquisition of digital channel LCN27 from Consorzio Alphabet.

Boutique practice Gallavotti Bernardini & Partners fields an ‘extremely professional and skilled’ team that assists media and sports clients such as RTI, Warner Bros and UEFA with all transactional, regulatory and contentious TMT issues. The ‘knowledgeable’ Carlo Gallavotti and the ‘wise’ Mario Gallavotti are recommended.

Orsingher Ortu – Avvocati Associati’s TMT practice is ‘characterised by deep industry knowledge, access to an expert network and exceptional flexibility’. The ‘highly skilledDomenico Colella is a key figure in the practice, which is headed by Marco Consonni; the team recently advised Amazon on consumer protection issues and regularly assists The Walt Disney Company with contractual, regulatory and contentious matters.

Bird & Bird’s TMT practice is led by Massimiliano Mostardini and assists high-profile media and telecoms corporations with the full spread of regulatory, transactional and IP matters. Key clients include Dailymotion and Italiaonline.

Cugia Cuomo & Associati continues to advise on an increasing number of regulatory IT and media matters related to new electronic communication services and digital payment. Other recent work includes representing Alpitel in an Italian Competition Authority (ICA) proceeding concerning abuse of dominant position. Fabrizio Cugia di Sant’Orsola is recommended.

Alongside its strong transactional credentials, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is also adept at assisting clients with regulatory issues in the TMT sector: practice head Luca Ulissi recently advised Betfair Italia on Italian gambling regulation and data protection regulations.

Gianni, Origoni, Grippo, Cappelli & Partners recently assisted a consortium of RCS shareholders with an €811m offer to buy RCS Media Group. Nino Di Bella and Francesco Gianni head the practice, which covers transactional, contentious and regulatory media expertise.

Mondini Rusconi Studio Legale is ‘strongly committed to the client’ and often advises key media players on regulatory and IP matters. Giorgio Mondini recently advised Univideo regarding the online distribution of audiovisual works.

Nctm Studio Legale provides ‘high-quality legal analyses’ on the full spread of transactional and regulatory TMT matters. Carlo Grignani advised Experian Holding Italia on the integration of its Italian business units into Experian-Cerved Information Services, a joint venture.

CMS is particularly strong in IT matters and recently advised Infogroup on several outsourcing agreements. The team also acted for telemedicine website Ultraspecialisti on privacy and regulatory issues. Italo de Feo and Paolo Scarduelli are the names to note.

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP exclusively focuses on competition advice in the media and telecoms sector, where it recently represented Telecom Italia and Sky Italia in ICA investigations. Mario Siragusa and Marco D’Ostuni are the key contacts.

IT and data protection is the core of ICT Legal Consulting – Studio Legale Associato Balboni, Bolognini & Partners’ service offering. In 2016, Paolo Balboni and Luca Bolognini advised Fiat Chrysler Automobiles on data protection compliance. Other clients include Sky Italia, Technogym and BP Italia.
