Linklaters’ Italian, UK and US high-yield and banking specialists are experienced in advising on plain vanilla investment grade transactions, highly complex leveraged deals and innovative asset financings. The team recently assisted Tikehau Investment Management with the financing of the acquisition and recapitalisation of Selcom. Emiliano Conio, who ‘sees through complex issues to come up with useful solutions’, led advice to Apollo on a €170m refinancing of its acquisition of a portfolio of Italian and pan-European offices. Corrado Angelelli is highly regarded.

Gattai Minoli Agostinelli & Partnerscombines the professionalism of a global top law firm with the market insight that clients need in Italy’; the group is particularly highly rated for LBO financings, corporate finance and sport finance transactions, and has also developed a real estate finance practice. In recent highlights, the ‘extremely respected and experiencedRiccardo Agostinelli advised Saviola on its medium-term debt reorganisation. Lorenzo Vernetti is ‘commercially minded, responsive and smart’ and Gaetano Carrello, Marco Leonardi and Emanuela Campari Bernacchi are other experienced practitioners.

Latham & Watkins LLP is particularly active in acquisition finance, corporate lending, leveraged finance, and debt restructuring. Andrea Novarese led advice to Autogrill on a high-value facility agreement refinancing. Marcello Bragliani and recently promoted counsel Mauro Saccani are also well regarded.

Norton Rose Fulbright’s banking team has a particularly strong standing in the financial institutions, energy and infrastructure, mining, and commodities sectors, but also focuses on transport, technology, life sciences and healthcare-related matters. Arturo Sferruzza heads the Italian banking and energy teams; and Gennaro Mazzuoccolo is another key adviser. Mario Lisanti joined Ashurst in Milan.

White & Case (Europe) LLP advises non-bank investors and funds on leveraged finance matters, including senior and bridge commitments, and private high-yield matters, as well as restructuring, refinancing, and NPL portfolio acquisitions. It advised Open Fiber on a €510m bridge financing granted by BNP Paribas, UniCredit and Société Générale. Giuseppe Barra Caracciolo, Iacopo Canino and Gianluca Fanti are the recommended advisers, alongside Michael Immordino.

Ashurst hired Mario Lisanti, who now leads the Italian banking team, from Norton Rose Fulbright. The group advised Irminio on its up to $100m borrowing base facility. Other key team members include energy and infrastructure project finance specialist Carloandrea Meacci, Italy head Franco Vigliano and counsel Umberto Antonelli.

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLPprovides an excellent service’. Recent work includes advising private equity fund Lone Star on the financing for the potential acquisition of Grandi Stazioni Retail, the lease management, media and advertising business of Italy’s national railway operator. Carlo de Vito Piscicelli, Roberto Bonsignore, Pietro Fioruzzi, Giuseppe Scassellati-Sforzolini and the ‘extremely responsive and prepared’ counsel Claudio Di Falco are all recommended.

Hogan Lovells Studio Legale’sCarlo Massini, who ‘has good negotiation skills’, led advice to Forno D’Asolo on credit facilities made available by Banca Popolare dell'Emilia Romagna and UBI Banca.

Nctm Studio Legale handles banking and financing transactions for private equity firms and prestigious global borrowers. Recent matters include advising Ambienta and Tattile on acquisition financing for the proposed acquisition of Chromanses. Eugenio Siragusa is ‘a very talented lawyer’. Stefano Padovani, Corrado Verna and Giovanni de’ Capitani di Vimercate are other names to note.

Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe is adept at advising on NPLs, real estate finance and general lending transactions. Raul Ricozzi, who is focused on project financing, leveraged, asset and shipping financing and debt issues, ‘has strong knowledge’; and real estate finance expert Emanuela Molinaro is ‘a great negotiator’. Patrizio Messina is also widely praised.

Pedersoli Studio Legale is best known for its expertise in acquisition finance and sophisticated corporate finance transactions, but also attracts a steadily increasing stream of real estate finance instructions. The team advised, in coordination with a US law firm, Italian company Zobele Holding on facilities granted by a pool of international banks. Maura Magioncalda, Alessandra De Cantellis and Consuelo Citterio are highly regarded. Alessandro Fosco Fagotto departed for Dentons.

Simmons & Simmons advises on acquisition and leveraged finance, export finance, real estate finance, structured finance, project finance, and alternative lending. It advised SNAI on an €85m credit facility by a syndicate of banks. Nicholas Lasagna is ‘reactive and available’; Davide D’Affronto is ‘a great negotiator’; and Fabrizio Dotti ‘has deep legal knowledge’. Romeo Battigaglia is also highly rated.

Studio Professionale Associato a Baker & McKenzie advises on bilateral and syndicated bank financings, acquisition finance, project finance, and debt restructuring. Alberto Fornari is the name to note.

Proactive firmCBA Studio Legale e Tributario recruited ‘the always available’ Francesco Dialti from Studio Legale Associato a Watson Farley & Williams. The team advised a Falck Renewables Group special purpose vehicle on the refinancing of its financial indebtedness.

CMS hired Domenico Gaudiello as public finance leader from DLA Piper. Banking and financial law head Paolo Bonolis is recommended for complex financing transactions.

Dentons’s ‘excellent team’ assists with acquisition and leveraged finance, structured finance, general corporate lending and refinancing, project finance, performance guarantees, and security packages; the group is also experienced in real estate financing. Managing counsel Dina Collepardi is highly regarded; Alessandro Fosco Fagotto joined from Pedersoli Studio Legale and Giovanni Diotallevi joined from Chiomenti Studio Legale.

Eversheds Sutherland Associazione Professionale recently advised a pan-European investment fund on a real estate-related financing granted by UBI Banca. Marco Franzini and Alessandro Engst are the key advisers.

Gatti Pavesi Bianchi Studio Legale Associato is ‘devoted to its clients’. The team acts in high-profile financings and restructurings and is particularly focused on property and acquisition finance, as well as on general lending for corporate purposes. Andrea Limongelli is highly rated.

Giovannelli e Associati Studio Legale’s Michele Mocarelli, who ‘has extensive banking sector knowledge’, joined from Pavia e Ansaldo: he recently advised a food ingredients sector company on its refinancing.

Lombardi Segni e Associati’s ‘level of service is high’: the team is particularly recommended for its assistance to industrial companies and private equity funds with acquisition, leverage and project finance. Macchi di Cellere Gangemi hired of counsel Emanuele Cusa from R&P Legal. The ‘reactive’ practice advises on the financing and refinancing of projects in the energy, infrastructure and water service sectors. Claudio Visco is highly regarded.
