The ‘outstanding’ corporate department at CMS provides ‘services of the highest standard’; it excels in complex and cross-border M&A in the TMT, life sciences and financial services sectors, among others. ‘Top-notch M&A lawyer’ Anikó Kircsi is ‘creative, practical and business-oriented’; she recently advised a major bank on an acquisition. Senior associate Gábor Gelencsér is also recommended. Since publication Andreas Köhler joined from Réczicza Dentons Europe LLP.

Pál Takács heads the team at Hegymegi-Barakonyi és Tarsa Baker & McKenzie, which recently advised Germany-headquartered STRATEC Biomedical on the purchase of Hungarian company Diatron from a US-based private equity firm. Ines Radmilovic is recommended.

A ‘leading firm in Hungary in corporate and M&A’, Lakatos, Köves and Partners expanded its already well-established practice by hiring Ádám Máttyus from Andrékó Kinstellar in 2016. It is often involved in top-end M&A domestically and regionally for its solid client base of multinational companies. Richard Lock is recommended.

Réczicza Dentons Europe LLP has a strong position in the private equity space, with recent highlights including Edward Keller’s advice to Enterprise Investors on the sale of a sports nutrition company. Rob Irving and Anita Horváth are other key names in the group. Susan Wong relocated from the firm’s Beijing office to head the CEE China desk, focusing on cross-border corporate transactions. Since publication Andreas Köhler moved to CMS.

Siegler Law Office/Weil, Gotshal & Manges excels in financial services M&A, where it has ‘deep knowledge of the industry, regulatory requirements and local legislation’. It also receives a steady stream of M&A mandates from major clients in the private equity, telecoms and energy industries. Among the key names in the department are David Dederick, the ‘experienced and knowledgeable’ Konrád Siegler and recently promoted counsel Pál Szabó.

The ‘strong team’ at Allen & Overy is regularly involved in the largest regional transactions, particularly in the financial services and telecoms sectors. It recently advised Erste Group Bank on two investments in Erste Bank Hungary. Zoltán Lengyel and ‘good negotiator’ Hugh Owens are the names to note.

English-qualified practice head Anthony O’Connor has made strides at Andrékó Kinstellar since his arrival at the firm in 2016, expanding the already solid client base of major corporates and private equity funds. Counsel Ákos Nagy is ‘very service-oriented’ and ‘professional’, and managing associate Ákos Mátés-Lányi is ‘very knowledgeable and responsive’.

Erös Ügyvédi Iroda/Squire Patton Boggs had a busy year in 2016, handling cross-border deals for longstanding clients in the manufacturing, private equity, media and retail sectors, and also picked up a number of new client wins. Ákos Erős recently advised a US-based company on the sale of a Hungarian business.

Part of a network with a substantial presence across the CEE region, Faludi Wolf Theiss frequently handles cross-border transactions, and has complementary expertise in merger control, corporate litigation and data privacy issues. János Tóth was part of a team which advised Ascendis on its multi-jurisdictional acquisition of Scitec Nutrition.

Zoltán Forgó heads the ‘responsive and commercial’ team at Forgó, Damjanovic & Partners Law Firm, which has a good track record in large transactions in the CEE region. As well as its extensive corporate client base, the group has experience advising private equity and venture capital companies and high-net-worth individuals. Gábor Damjanovic is also recommended.

The team at Horváth & Partners DLA Piper gives ‘structured, relevant and appropriate advice’, with András Posztl and counsel István Szatmáry in particular being noted for their ability to ‘quickly grasp the pertinent commercial issues’. In one recent highlight, practice head Gábor Molnár advised the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on its purchase of a stake in Erste Bank Hungary.

Oppenheim has a number of longstanding clients – notably in the energy, manufacturing, financial services and media sectors – and also picked up several new clients during 2015 and 2016. Among its recent standout mandates was its representation of a consortium of financial investors in the acquisition of MKB Bank. József Bulcsú Fenyvesi heads the team, which also includes Mihály Barcza and Attila Terényi.

Szabo Kelemen & Partners Attorneysprovides an international level of service at reasonable fees’. The practice is headed by the ‘very professional’ László Kelemen, who is ‘an impressive negotiator’; he and the team recently advised MKB on the sale of MKB-Euroleasing Autopark to ALD Automotive.

The sizeable team at Szecskay Attorneys at Law is able to handle a high volume of M&A and other corporate transactions for major corporate clients and also has a strong reputation for advising start-ups. Sándor Németh is acting for a US-based client regarding the proposed acquisition of a Hungarian company. András Szecskay and Orsolya Görgényi are also recommended.

Clients of VJT & Partners are full of praise for the ‘very reliable team’ of ‘true professionals’, who are ‘organised, expedient, accurate and flexible’. Corporate and M&A work form a cornerstone of the firm, which has a clear focus and specialism in cross-border work. András Lovretity has ‘an intricate understanding of the client’s business’. János Tamás Varga, Zoltán Csernus and Gábor Hacsi are also highly recommended.

At bpv Jádi Németh Attorneys at Law, Péter Garancsi’s busy corporate department acts for a well-established and diverse client base, as well as attracting new clients across the pharmaceuticals, automotive and food and beverage industries. Recent work spanned restructurings, market entry, commercial advisory work and large-scale M&A. Andrea Jádi Németh is recommended.

CLV Partners - Csabai & Partners Law Firm is particularly recommended for pharmaceuticals deals, where it shows ‘strong industry knowledge’, but its client base also encompasses recruitment agencies, consumer products manufacturers and retailers, among others. ‘Very charismatic attorney’ Marianna Csabai is ‘easy to work with’ and gives ‘timely answers’.

Conybeare Solicitors specialises in corporate and M&A work, particularly in the oil and gas sector, where it ‘acts as a partner and not just a service provider’. Founding partner and ‘tireless worker’ Steven Conybeare heads the team, which ‘knows the region and regional players very well’.

Deloitte Legal Erdos and Partners Law Firm has successfully established itself in the market following its arrival in 2014. Its track record in corporate transactions in the financial services, energy and real estate sectors is of particular note. Practice head Péter Göndöcz receives plaudits for his ‘great negotiation style and skill’.

The corporate department at Jalsovszkyprovides usable and understandable advice’, plus ‘value for money’. Pál Jalsovszky heads the team, which is active in strategic M&A and private equity transactions.

Kapolyi Law Firm produces ‘business-minded solutions’, and the team is ‘proactive, responsive and always happy to assist’. In particular, József Kapolyi is an ‘outstanding lawyer’, while Mónika Kapetz is ‘very professional, detail-oriented and focused’.

Ildikó Varga heads the ‘highly qualified’ team at Nagy és Trócsányi Ügyvédi Iroda, which is highlighted for its ‘professional experience and customer focus’. The team attracted several new clients in 2016, including Ripplewood Advisors and FOSS Analytical. Viktória Szilágyi is also recommended.

2016 signalled a year of change at Noerr; the corporate department is now headed by Ágnes Tompa, who joined from her own firm, as did senior associate Viktor Füzi. The team represents Hungarian and European clients in the automotive, aviation and logistics sectors, among others.

The ‘fast, responsive and reliable’ corporate and M&A department at Partos & Noblet in co-operation with Hogan Lovells International LLP is led by Sándor Békési, who has the ‘ability to give a fair and balanced view’. It is regularly instructed by clients in regulated sectors such as media and financial services.

Sándor Szegedi Szent-Ivány Komáromi Eversheds (a member of Eversheds Sutherland) has a broad workload that takes in large-scale transactions as well as day-to-day corporate and commercial advice for multinational clients. Department co-heads Ildikó Szegedi and Péter Sándor recently advised a well-known company on the termination of a joint venture in three European countries.

Kinga Hetényi’s team at Schoenherr Hetényi Ügyvédi Iroda acts for international and domestic clients in strategic M&A and private equity deals. Associate Gábor Kordoványi, who joined from Reti, Antall & Partners in 2016, is recommended.
