The increasing sophistication and cross-border expertise of local firms is providing a substantial challenge but international firms still tend to win large public tenders. Nonetheless, market dynamics are shifting, as the trend for new boutique practices spinning off from established firms has continued. Czech firms are also looking to expand abroad, particularly in jurisdictions to the east. Gide Loyrette Nouel announced its exit from the market and closed its Czech operations, with the Prague team joining local firm PRK Partners.
Meanwhile, state protectionist measures have meant that the country has fared better than some other markets during the economic downturn. Recent political elections have engendered various reforms such as tax rises, budget cuts and efficiency savings that have given rise to new sources of legal work. Renewable energy remained a hot area for investment and development in 2010, but the impending end to the state’s tariff scheme may impact future growth of the sector.
