Cyprus re-elected to International Maritime Organisation Council

At the recent General Assembly of the International Maritime Organisation Cyprus was re-elected to the IMO Council for the next two years. With the support of 134 member states, Cyprus secured the second highest vote in the election.

The IMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations with 169 Member States and three Associate Members. Its primary purpose is to develop and maintain a comprehensive regulatory framework for shipping and its remit includes safety, environmental concerns, legal matters, technical co-operation, maritime security and the efficiency of shipping.

Cyprus's merchant fleet ranks tenth worldwide and is the third largest among EU members. It has been a member of the IMO since 1973.

The Cyprus Shipping Chamber welcomed Cyprus's election, saying that "Cyprus will continue to have the opportunity to contribute actively in the formation of policies for international shipping, as well as to promote the interests of Cyprus shipping at international level."
