Market leaderBoyanov & Codraws upon years of experience of international transactions and structures’. Practice head Yordan Naydenov has ‘profound expertise’ and other key figures are Damian Simeonov, Alexander Chatalbashev and commercial team head Raina Dimitrova. The firm handled Eurobank Bulgaria’s acquisition of Alpha Bank’s Bulgarian branch. Other clients include Mondelēz International, Microsoft, Amazon and Samsung.

CMS has ‘international experience and deep local expertise, which is highly valuable in cross-border transactions’. The team recently advised Telekom Austria Group on its subsidiary Mobitel’s €115m acquisition of blizoo, the second-largest fixed line operator in Bulgaria. The team includes Atanas Bangachev as well as Sofia managing partner David Butts, who is ‘an excellent lawyer’, and Gentscho Pavlov, who shows ‘commitment to excellence’.

Djingov, Gouginski, Kyutchukov & Velichkov is, according to one client, ‘probably the top firm in the country, especially for complicated transactions’. Zdravka Ugrinova and Violetta Kunze jointly lead the team, which includes Stephan Kyutchukov, who is arguably ‘the best corporate lawyer in Bulgaria’. Kunze led local law advice to US-based Equinix on its multi-jurisdictional $3.6bn takeover of TelecityGroup.

Schoenherr (in cooperation with Stoyanov & Tsekova) is ‘absolutely excellent in all aspects’. It handles many of the country’s largest deals, such as assisting VTB Capital with the €330m forced sale of BTC and advising Sweden’s EQT on the €120m sale of blizoo to Telekom Austria; Ilko Stoyanov led on both transactions.

Andrey Delchev at Andrey Delchev and Partners – Eurolex Bulgaria is ‘very charismatic and convincing in negotiations’ and fellow partner Magdalena Valova is ‘excellent in corporate law’. Clients include China Communications Construction, Groupe Soufflet and Communicorp Group.

Dimitrov, Petrov & Co stands out for its team of ‘excellent professionals and business-oriented approach’, as well as its private equity expertise. Recent work includes acting for venture capital fund Neveq II in various capacities and, in late 2014, the team advised Advance Properties on the buyout of US private equity firm Rohatyn Group’s remaining stake in Huvepharma AD. Trakya Glass Bulgaria is a recent client gain. Practice head Zoya Todorova is ‘a distinguished lawyer, focused on excellence and able to address every issue’.

Dinova, Rusev & Partners provides ‘a high level of service and ethical standards’ and acts for multinational companies including Marks and Spencer plc and McDonald’s. Anelia Dinova advised Marinopoulos Group on the attempted merger of its subsidiary KMB, Carrefour’s franchisee in Bulgaria, with Bulgarian supermarket chain Piccadilly.

Georgiev, Todorov & Co’s ‘very professional’ team counts Roche Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Stock Exchange as clients. Senior partner Arno Mamasian is advising an international casino chain on establishing operations in Bulgaria.

Hristov & Partners’ name partner Pavel Hristov has ‘great knowledge of corporate law’. He worked as local counsel alongside Hegymegi-Barakonyi és Társa Baker & McKenzie to advise ALD Automotive Hungary, part of Société Générale Group, on acquiring the fleet management and leasing business of MKB Autopark.

Kambourov & Partners is ‘very efficient and proactive in recognising business opportunities’. Veronika Hadjieva, who is ‘truly gifted and commercially oriented’, led advice to hedge fund Worldview following its takeover of Petroceltic Bulgaria. Vladimir Rangeloff is ‘a skilled dealmaker’.

Penkov, Markov & Partnersranks among the best for professional performance and thoroughness, accuracy and promptness of advice’. Vladimir Penkov and Ivan Markov are ‘very well connected’ and seasoned commercial lawyers. Clients include Heineken, Credit Suisse and the EBRD.

Spasov & Bratanov’s experienced team includes name partners Georgi Spasov and Boyko Bratanov. It advises several well-known multinationals and foreign-owned companies, including energy giant ČEZ.

Tsvetkova Bebov Komarevski routinely attracts high-end mandates and recently assisted Italian multinational Hera Group with consolidating two Bulgarian natural gas distribution and supply subsidiaries; it also handled the Bulgarian aspects of Henkel’s global restructuring. Venelin Dimitrov is ‘very pragmatic’ and gives ‘balanced and accurate’ advice.

Top-quality law firmWolf Theiss handled Bulgaria-headquartered global insurance software company Fadata’s sale of a majority stake to private equity firm Riverside and UK-listed insurer Charles Taylor. Richard Clegg is ‘very knowledgeable and experienced’ and managing partner Anna Rizova is ‘user-friendly and proactive’.

Andonov & Radinska Law Firm is ‘among the best in Bulgaria’. Name partners Hristo Andonov and Diliana Radinska jointly head the practice, which has been advising leading domestic food producer Gradus Group on a food and distribution agreement with a foreign state-owned company. General Electric is also a client.

Arsov Natchev Ganeva’s client roster includes Lidl, Schreiber Foods and Sofiyska Voda, which is a subsidiary of Veolia Group. Marin Arsov and Jivko Rokov jointly head the practice.

Atanassov & Ivanov Law Firm is ‘very professional and knowledgeable’. It advised Michelin on the reorganisation of its Bulgarian operations. Stoyan Atanassov and Iliyan Ivanov are the key names.

At CHSH Gerginov Aehrenthal Zivny, Boyko Gerginov acted as local counsel on the Bulgarian aspects of Hewlett-Packard’s business separation. Other clients include Samsung Electronics Romania.

CasePro is valued for its ‘flexible and proactive’ approach. Boyan Lazarov assisted venture capital fund Neveq II with multiple investments, while Alexander Andonov advised Eurobet, Bulgaria’s largest online gambling operator, on its long-term business cooperation with strategic investor Intralot.

Delchev & Partners’ team has ‘a deep understanding of clients’ core interests’. Its extensive international client base includes Bovie Medical, Reward Gateway (UK) and Austria-based Kapsch Trafficcom. Emil Delchev is the practice head.

Deloitte Legal Law Firm provides ‘an excellent level of service’. Clients include well-known multinationals and banking subsidiaries. Reneta Petkova is the key name.

Dyulgerova & Penkova Law Firm has a ‘strong’ team, whose clients include adidas Bulgaria and Kastel Karlovo, a Bulgarian exporter and trader in industrial parts. Lyubimka Dyulgerova and Victoria Penkova ‘collaborate perfectly’.

Gugushev & Partners Law Officeadheres to very professional standards’. It handled Hong Kong investment company bma Investment’s divestment of Bulgaria Development Holdings to Capital Concept. Dimitrinka Metodieva is ‘a highly competent and responsible lawyer’.

Kinstellar’s Diana Dimova provides ‘a cool-headed approach’ that instils ‘confidence’. Recent deals include handling the Bulgarian aspects of global chemicals company Arkema’s €485m acquisition of Dutch sealant and adhesives maker Den Braven from Egeria.

Penev LLP’s name partner and practice head Sergey Penev stands out for his experience in corporate and commercial matters. Christopher Christov is another name to note.

CEE regional firm Peterka & Partners Law Firm has ‘a very professional, highly skilled and precise approach’. Director for Bulgaria Plamen Peev led advice to Honeywell on purchasing a Bulgarian software company.

Popov & Partners’ Angel Buzalov is ‘exceptionally good at his work, very open-minded, creative and a strategic thinker’. Clients include Miele Center Max, the Bulgarian operation of the German household appliances giant.

Sabev & Partners Law Firm advised the Bulgarian subsidiary of a multinational pharmaceuticals company on the local aspects of divesting its genetics business. The advice was led by Assen Alexiev and Boryana Boteva, who are ‘very productive under pressure’.

Stoeva, Kuyumdjieva & Vitliemov Law Firm is ‘one of the most professional firms in the Bulgarian market’. Pavel Vitliemov led advice to investment funds Empower Capital and TCEE Fund III on a capital investment in MammothDB, a software developer.

Practice head Ivana Bliznakova is the key name in Tocheva & Mandazhieva Law Office’s experienced team, which stands out for its expertise in the technology space. The group handled Pentana’s acquisition of Bulgarian company Logen.
