Specialist asset finance firm Basch & Rameh is a leading name for aviation finance, and ‘one of the stars in the aviation area’. Its practice includes litigation in the sector, an area for which founding partner Carlos Rameh is particularly recommended. The firm is based in São Paulo and has a second office in Rio de Janeiro.

Aviation specialist Bernardi & Schnapp Advogados is ‘a diligent adviser’, and acts for a range of aircraft manufacturers, airport operators, insurers and lenders. A strength is advising airlines operating in Brazil on regulatory matters, such as obtaining permits, as well as representing them in passenger claims. Other recent work includes negotiating commercial agreements and airport operation concessions. Ricardo Bernardi is ‘knowledgeable’ and ‘dependable’, and Carla Cristina Schnapp is also a name to note.

Artur Carbone leads the five-partner group at specialist maritime firm Escritório Jurídico Carbone, which handles the full range of shipping matters. The dispute resolution team, under the leadership of Claudia Iabrudi, is highly recommended for arbitration. Clients include shipowners, trading companies, salvage companies and P&I clubs.

Porto Alegre-based shipping boutique Farinon, Carvalho da Silva & Advogados Associados is ‘outstanding at all levels’. It is regularly instructed in relation to salvage operations of ships which have run aground; recent work includes advising Boskalis in relation to bulk carrier Nilos, which was re-floated after one week aground the Amazon river. Aliança Navegação e Logística is another key client. Name partner and practice head Roberto Porto Farinon, Ruy Fernando Carvalho da Silva, and ‘high performer and great negotiator’ José Augusto Mendes Marques are recommended.

Kincaid | Mendes Vianna Advogados has a long history in maritime and shipping law work, and is currently expanding its energy and environment practices. It consistently attracts instructions from major national and international players, such as Aliança Navegação e Logística, Maersk, MSC, Prumo and Samarco, in relation to contractual negotiations, tender offers and disputes. Godofredo Mendes Vianna, Camila Mendes Vianna Cardoso, Iwam Jaeger and Lucas Leite Marques are highly recommended by clients. Breno Garbois left for Almeida Advogados in November 2015.

Highly rated shipping boutique Shipping Consultoria, in Rio de Janeiro, acts for companies active in oil exploration, import and export, as well as for ports, P&I clubs and shipyards, and is active in accident cases, customs procedures and maritime law disputes. Fernando Sobrino Porto is the name to note.

The ‘proactive, responsive and business-oriented’ team at DDSA – De Luca, Derenusson, Schuttoff e Azevedo Advogados is highly recommended for aviation work. It is regularly instructed by airlines, and has been active advising banks and others on the acquisition and leasing of aircraft. The ‘detail-oriented’ Ana Luisa Derenusson heads the practice.

Demarest Advogados’ ‘quick and efficient’ team covers corporate and finance work in the shipping and aviation sectors. The ‘committedGabriel Ricardo Kuznietz leads both teams, with ‘problem solverLuciana Goulart Penteado recommended for aviation matters. The group represented Iberia in litigation with the public prosecutor’s office concerning carbon emissions.

Felsberg Advogados delivers ‘prompt and insightful’ assistance, and stands out for its practice in helicopter financing, mainly acting on the creditor side. Recent work includes advising American Airlines on a $1.05bn credit facility provided by BNDES for the purchase of 45 passenger jets from Embraer. João Paulo Servera joined in May 2015 from Veirano Advogados, and now heads the aviation practice. Senior associate Isabel Andrade is recommended for regulatory matters.

Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice Advogados is particularly recommended for aviation financing matters, with Fabio Falkenburger the name to note. The firm also has a highly-rated maritime and offshore practice, acting for Ultrapetrol, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC, among others.

Mattos Filho, Veiga Filho, Marrey Jr. e Quiroga Advogados covers both aviation and shipping/maritime work. Giovani Loss and Pablo Sorj are the key names for project finance in the shipping sector. On the aviation side, clients include Azul Linhas Aéreas, United Airlines, VRG Linhas Aéreas and Gol; the firm recently advised the latter on a strategic agreement with Delta Air Lines.

Under the leadership of Adolpho Julio de Carvalho, Pinheiro Neto Advogados has a highly acclaimed aviation-finance practice. It recently advised LATAM Airlines Group on a $1.02bn EETC, the first financing of its kind issued by an international carrier in Latin America, to finance Airbus A350 acquisitions. The firm also handles regulatory and dispute resolution work, in both the shipping and aviation sectors. Associate Felipe Bonsenso Veneziano is another name to note.

With offices in Rio Grande, Pelotas and Porto Alegre, shipping boutique Advocacia Rocha Baptista acts for shipowners, insurers and agents, as well as for importers, exporters and freight forwarders. Recent work includes acting for Worthington Bulk in a cargo claim, and assisting Evalend Shipping in securing the release of a vessel from arrest. Arthur Rocha Baptista heads a ‘truly international’ team, with Porto Alegre-based senior partner Rafael Nogueira Simas and Pelotas-based Maximilian Canez Fernandes also recommended.

Siano & Martins Advogados Associados specialises in maritime and shipping matters, and regularly acts in casualty cases. Leven Siano draws on an ‘excellent network in the maritime industry’. Fabiana Simões Martins is highly rated for litigation.

Covering rail and shipping matters, Veirano Advogados’ ‘quality of work, experience, and industry knowledge are of the highest calibre’. The firm recently defended MMX in a case brought by MRS Logística concerning the termination of a logistics contract and outstanding payments. Another area of particular expertise is the offshore industry. ‘Experienced’ Rio de Janeiro-based practice head Marcelo Mattos is ‘adept at developing trust’.

ASBZ Advogados is recommended for aviation, and noted for its experience in ‘saving litigation costs by settling cases out of court’. The team recently defended five airlines, including Korean Airlines and United Airlines, against class actions filed by the public prosecutor of Guarulhos concerning carbon dioxide emissions. On the M&A side, a highlight was advising United Continental Holdings on the acquisition of a 5% stake in Azul Linhas Aéreas. Guilherme Amaral heads the practice.

Olympio de Carvalho e Silva’s team at Castro, Barros, Sobral, Gomes Advogados is highly rated for dispute resolution in the transportation sector, and also covers regulatory and administrative shipping matters. Its recent work includes advising Tamara Shipping in relation to a capsized vessel.

Di Ciero e Mello Franco Advogados has expertise in mass litigation, and strong experience in aviation matters. Its impressive client roster includes major airlines such as Emirates, Lufthansa and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Founding partner Simone Di Ciero is recommended.

Neil Montgomery’s team at Montgomery & Associados is regularly instructed by large international airlines such as Singapore Airlines, South African Airways and Turkish Airlines. Recent work includes acting for Insel Air in relation to passenger claims.

Rio de Janeiro-based Pedro Calmon Filho & Associados (PCF&A) is a specialist shipping and maritime law firm. Founding partner Pedro Calmon Filho has an excellent reputation.

Belo Horizonte-based Rolim, Viotti & Leite Campos Advogados is experienced in the leasing, purchase and sale of aircraft, as well as in related tax and regulatory matters. Clients include specialist helicopter clients such as Helibras, Líder Aviação and Helivia Aero Taxi. Ricardo Alvarenga and Alessandro Mendes Cardoso co-head the team.

Siqueira Castro Advogados has ‘a very dedicated and competent team with profound knowledge of the area’, and ‘extensive international experience’; shipping and maritime litigation is a strength. Recommended partners include ‘dynamic and competent professionalRenato Otto Kloss and Fernando Villela de Andrade Vianna, who ‘pays attention to details’.

Claudia Elena Bonelli is recommended at TozziniFreire Advogados, which handles port, airport, rail and road matters.

Trench, Rossi e Watanabe Advogados, associated with Baker & McKenzie’s shipping practice is particularly active in oil-related matters, with Danielle Gomes de Almeida Valois recommended. Clients include Bram Offshore Transportes Marítimos, Estaleiro Navship and Transpetro.

Maritime law expert’ Bernardo Mendes Vianna leads the team at Vieira, Rezende, Barbosa e Guerreiro Advogados, which is notable for its emergency response capabilities.

Cruise operations expert’ Breno Garbois has established Almeida Advogados’ shipping practice, having joined the firm from Kincaid | Mendes Vianna Advogados in November 2015. Clients note that ‘crisis situations are promptly attended to’.
