Highly rated for media and entertainment matters, Cesnik, Quintino & Salinas Advogados provides ‘an excellent service’, with particular experience in the raising of public and private funds in the audiovisual industry. In 2015, the group negotiated all of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s co-production agreements in Brazil, and provided similar assistance to O2 Filmes, Rádio e Televisão Record and Viacom. Other clients include free-to-air and pay-tv companies such as Globosat, as well as branded content sponsors and advertisers. ‘Film expert’ Fábio de Sá Cesnik is highly recommended along with Rodrigo Kopke Salinas and Gilberto Toscano, who is ‘very experienced in video-on-demand matters’.

Expert’ telecoms boutique Mundie e Advogados had a busy year representing operators in administrative procedures concerning the Industrial Exploitation of Dedicated Lines (EILD). In other work, it assisted an SMP operator in a bidding process by ANATEL for the right to use radio frequencies, and advised numerous clients on multimedia communication service regulation and the new internet legal framework. Pinheiro Neto Advogados has a ‘very technical’ internet/IT and telecoms team, with Esther Nunes, Raphael de Cunto and the ‘available and intelligent’ André Zonaro Giacchetta the standout practitioners. In addition to transactions in the TMT sector, the group delivers ‘confident analyses’ on regulatory matters, and dispute resolution is also a strength. Azevedo Sette Advogados enters the ranking after its integration in July 2016 of TMT heavyweight Barretto Ferreira e Brancher (BKBG), including well-regarded founding partners Ricardo Barretto Ferreira da Silva and Paulo Brancher. In addition to telecoms work, the ‘technically adept’ group regularly advises on technology licence agreements, mobile payment systems and data protection matters. Bitelli Advogados provides ‘quick, precise and reliable advice’, covering media and entertainment, and IT matters. Marcos Alberto Sant’Anna Bitelli is a ‘dedicated and prominent’ media expert. Thiago Mendes Ladeira left the firm in February 2016.

The ‘very creative’ team at Manesco, Ramires, Perez, Azevedo Marques Sociedade de Advogados is regularly instructed by large telecoms operators. ‘Team player’ Eduardo Augusto de Oliveira Ramires is the name to note for telecoms regulation. The ‘accomplished lawyers’ at media and entertainment boutique Schivartche Advogados regularly assist international clients including Sony Pictures, Paramount and Warner in relation to investments in and the distribution of feature films produced in Brazil. A highlight for Trench, Rossi e Watanabe Advogados, associated with Baker & McKenzie was obtaining an injunction determining the interruption of the suspension of WhatsApp services in Brazil. Felsberg Advogados is active in corporate work for TMT clients, with corporate partner Evy Marques taking the lead. 2015 saw the team act on numerous technology transfer and software licence agreements, and it is experienced in sports and entertainment matters, including athletes’ image rights.

The ‘accurate and experienced’ marketing and advertising team at Inglez, Werneck, Ramos, Cury e Françolin Advogados has specialist expertise in the automotive sector. Founding partner Luiz Werneck acted for advertising agency AlmapBBDO in several administrative procedures, including one concerning a controversial Valentine’s Day advertising campaign.

KLA – Koury Lopes Advogados recently advised EchoStar on launching a satellite broadband service, and AVA Telecomunicações on launching telecoms services, respectively led by Karin Alvo and Guilherme Ieno, who are both recommended for telecoms advice. Advertising is another area of strength.

Levy & Salomão has a broad practice covering image rights, broadcasting regulation, advertising and sports. Alexandre Ditzel Faraco is the name to note for telecoms and technology, while Simone Lahorgue Nunes is recommended for media work. Ivandro Maciel Sanchez Junior is experienced in sports work, and advised HBS Host Broadcast Services on the broadcasting of the FIFA World Cup and the subsequent dissolution and cessation of activities.

Mattos Filho, Veiga Filho, Marrey Jr. e Quiroga Advogados provides ‘an excellent service on all levels’, covering contracts and investments in the media and entertainment field, and regulatory matters in the telecoms sector. IP boutique Dannemann Siemsen Advogados regularly advises TMT sector clients, and stands out for its knowledge of telecoms regulation. Attilio José Ventura Gorini is recommended for entertainment matters.

  • Philippine Court of Appeals Denies Issuance of Environmental Protection Order Against Mining Company

    In a decision issued on March 8, 2017, the Philippine Court of Appeals (CA) denied the petition by NGO Ang Aroroy ay Alagaan, Inc. and certain individuals, for the issuance of a writ of kalikasan against Filminera Resources Corporation, and its directors and officers. The petitioners have claimed that Filminera, which operates in the Philippine province of Masbate, had been causing environmental damage in the conduct of its mining operations in violation of local law, and that a writ of kalikasan should be issued.

    Lis Alibi pendens is Latin for "suit pending elsewhere" . Both Articles 27 and 28 of the EU Regulation 44/2001 regulate the existence of lis alibi pendens and related judicial actions. In particular it is a doctrine that regulates the jurisdictional relationship of courts hearing concurrent proceedings involving the same or related causes of action between the same parties pending in the courts of different Member States.
