Appreciated for its ‘depth of analysis’, Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice Advogados’ ‘outstanding’ labour group gained General Electric and Accenture do Brasil as new clients, and, among its work highlights, defended airline Azul in a class action brought by the labour union concerning a mass dismissal. Immigration is another area of expertise. Practice head Rodrigo Seizo Takano has ‘good business knowledge’, and Caroline Marchi and Claudio Pieroni are ‘dedicated specialists’. A former practice head at Lobo de Rizzo Advogados, Andréa Giamondo Massei Rossi joined the firm, bringing with her an excellent reputation as ‘one of the best labour lawyers in São Paulo’. However, the firm also saw the departure of Sólon de Almeida Cunha, who continues his career at Mattos Filho, Veiga Filho, Marrey Jr. e Quiroga Advogados.

Labour law boutique Mallet Advogados Associados handles strategic litigation and covers the full range of consultancy services. The seven-partner team includes some of the market’s most renowned attorneys, with Estêvão Mallet and Olinda Maria Moreira Alves de Oliveira Mallet the standout practitioners.

With nine partners covering labour and employment matters, TozziniFreire Advogados acts in relation to employment claims, mass terminations, strikes and negotiations with unions, as well as corporate governance structures. The firm recently represented Daiwa do Brasil in several cases filed by a labour union challenging the termination agreement for all employment contracts in Brazil. Marcelo Pereira Gômara handled a range of matters for BMW, while other key clients of the team include GE Brasil and Colgate-Palmolive. Mihoko Sirley Kimura is ‘fast in emergency situations’; Roberto Pierri Bersch, in Porto Alegre, is ‘technical and efficient’; and Alexandre de Almeida Cardoso is also recommended.

The ‘extremely responsive and attentive’ team at Veirano Advogados is renowned for its work in the areas of compliance investigations, collective dismissals and contract negotiations, with transactional support another key strength. The ‘personable and reassuring’ Luiz Guilherme Migliora successfully defended Philip Morris in litigation filed by its former HR director seeking $3m compensation, including moral damages, following termination. The firm also assisted Queiroz Galvão in relation to strategic changes in its compensation structure. Luiz Antonio dos Santos Jr. stands out for his ‘competence and depth in all areas’; Flávia Martins Azevedo provides ‘strategic advice for every situation’; and José Carlos Wahle is another name to note.

Demarest Advogados gives ‘top-notch’ advice. The six-partner group recently acted for Sanofi in a labour claim filed by an expatriate against the company in Brazil. In another highlight, the firm represented Volkswagen in two collective actions brought by the metalworkers’ union in Sorocaba, following a mass layoff of workers. Cássia Pizzotti and Renato Canizares are the key contacts for advisory work.

Well-established labour law boutique Granadeiro Guimarães Advogados fields a 30-strong team which handles compliance, risk assessment and contractual advice, represents clients in administrative proceedings and litigation, and undertakes negotiations with unions. Its client roster includes both domestic and international companies from wide-ranging sectors. Gustavo Granadeiro Guimarães is the key figure.

The ‘experienced’ Lilla, Huck, Otranto, Camargo Advogados represents a variety of major domestic clients, including insurance companies, advertising agencies and power distributors. It regularly handles contentious cases concerning employment status, collective bargaining agreements, and work accidents. Department head Maria Fernanda de Medeiros Redi is ‘very dedicated’, and is recommended along with Célia Mara Peres.

Mattos Filho, Veiga Filho, Marrey Jr. e Quiroga Advogados handles high-level strategic labour claims and the full range of non-contentious matters, assisting clients including Uber, J.P. Morgan, IBM and Goodyear. Vilma Toshie Kutomi and Domingos Antonio Fortunato Netto are recommended along with the highly regarded Cleber Venditti, who was promoted to partner.

Regularly handling large-scale and complex labour law matters, Pinheiro Neto Advogados is noted for its ‘business-oriented approach’ and team of ‘very accessible lawyers’. The group represented Hospital Oftalmológico de Brasília in litigation and an investigation filed by the labour prosecutor’s office regarding the alleged outsourcing of its core business by hiring doctors as independent contractors and consultants. Other clients include John Deere and Bridgestone. The ‘excellent’ Luís Antônio Ferraz Mendes heads the group, which includes Thais Galo and the ‘very practical’ Anna Thereza Monteiro de Barros.

Recognised boutique Robortella Advogados covers the full range of contentious and advisory matters, with particular strength in mass litigation and strategic disputes. A recent work highlight was representing a client in litigation related to outsourcing issues. The 30-strong team is led by the highly regarded Luiz Carlos Amorim Robortella.

Trench Rossi Wanatabe ‘fields a large team of excellent lawyers’, acting for clients including Emerson, Sony Pictures and new client American Airlines. The latter retained the group for representation in over 400 separate labour claims and assistance in improving the internal structure for handling labour debt. Tricia Maria Sá de Oliveira is ‘very experienced’, and Letícia Ribeiro Figueiredo is recommended for her ‘personal integrity’.

With a focus on contentious work, KLA-Koury Lopes Advogados primarily handles complex labour claims. Alexandre Pessoa and Ana Cristina Valentim co-head the department, which recently assisted a multinational company with due diligence matters, identifying a potential risk related to exposure to asbestos.

L.O. Baptista Advogados defended a Brazilian company in litigation filed by former high-level executives, and assisted another client in an investigation initiated by the labour prosecutor’s office. Practice head Fábio Chong de Lima ‘gets straight to the point’, and ‘always weighs the advantages and risks of a situation’.

Best known for its tax expertise, Machado Associados recently assisted an international client in a compliance review of labour and employment tax practices in Brazil; and represented another international company in labour litigation filed by a foreign executive. The group, which is led by Fabio Medeiros, also regularly advises foreign law firms on local labour regulations. Since the conclusion of research, Medeiros has left to join Lobo de Rizzo Advogados.

Labour and employment law boutique Mascaro e Nascimento Advogados handles both contentious and non-contentious matters for an impressive roster of domestic and international clients. The experienced Marcelo Costa Mascaro Nascimento is the firm’s key partner and office head.

Cássio Mesquita Barros at specialist labour law firm Mesquita Barros Advogados is recommended by clients and peers alike. The firm has a particularly strong reputation for disputes.

Labour law boutique Pipek Penteado e Paes Manso Advogados has a wide-ranging contentious and non-contentious practice. Co-founder Arnaldo Pipek is a key contact.

With offices in all major Brazilian cities, Siqueira Castro – Advogados’ labour and employment department includes 13 partners. The firm provided advice on day-to-day matters to General Electric, and represented Concremat in strategic labour claims filed by former employees. Carlos Eduardo Vianna Cardoso and Otavio Pinto e Silva co-head the department, with Giancarlo Borba commended for his ‘expertise and technical knowledge’.

Souza, Cescon, Barrieu & Flesch Advogados has an impressive roster of high-profile domestic and international clients in a wide range of industries. The group advised a shipping company in negotiations with a trade union relating to a collective dismissal. On the contentious side, it represented a Brazilian residential construction company in a class action filed by the public prosecutor’s office. Recently promoted partner Aldo Augusto Martinez Neto heads the department.

Tauil & Chequer Advogados in association with Mayer Brown’s labour and employment group is highly recommended for contentious work, and added a number of new clients to its portfolio, including ASG Software and CA Technologies. After former practice head Maurício Tanabe moved to Campos Mello Advogados, the group found a new head in Eduardo Soto, formerly at now-defunct firm Mattos Muriel Kestener Advogados.

ASBZ Advogados acts for a solid client base across a wide range of sectors, including technology, telecoms, finance, aviation, health and education. It recently assisted Singapore Airlines in relation to a mass layoff of its Brazilian employees. Decio Daidone Júnior is the key contact.

Co-headed by Adriano Ribeiro and Luiz Fernando Plens de Quevedo, the labour and employment team at Almeida Advogados counts BMC Software, Aerovias de México and Stericycle Brasil among its key clients. It represented the latter in a fraud case involving a former director who allegedly falsified documents to divert money from the company.

The three-lawyer labour and employment group at Araújo e Policastro Advogados, led by Ana Lúcia Pinke Ribeiro de Paiva, assisted logistics company Schnellecke Brasil in the negotiation of a collective bargaining agreement following a mass layoff. Other clients include Lindsay América do Sul and Keysight Technologies.

Azevedo Sette Advogados represents some of the largest international companies operating in Brazil. Recent mandates include advising IT company Rimini Street on various HR and labour matters, and also representing it in litigation. New clients include Netflix, Amazon and Ferrero do Brasil. Gustavo Magalhães Assis, Leila Azevedo Sette, Luanna Vieira de Lima Costa and Paulo Ciari de Almeida Filho are the names to note. Mariá Guitti is now with Andrade Foz Advogados.

BMA – Barbosa, Müssnich, Aragão is experienced in identifying risks and developing human resources policies and compliance systems in order to avoid litigation. Expedia and Mylan Laboratórios are active clients. Following Maurício Pessoa’s departure to found Pessoa & Pessoa Advogados Associados S/C, Cibelle Goldfarb and Luiz Marcelo Góis co-head the practice.

Bichara Advogados is best known for its litigation expertise, while its recent non-contentious work includes advising JCDecaux on remuneration and labour agreements. Practice head João Pedro Eyler Póvoa is recommended; his ‘strategies are always crystal clear and consistent’.

Appreciated for its ‘outstanding service and support’ in labour law matters, Castro, Barros, Sobral, Gomes Advogados handles litigation and provides transactional support. A recent highlight was advising a Japanese company on confidentiality and non-competition clauses in labour contracts. Valéria Wessel Souza Rangel de Paula is now in charge of the group, after former department head Flavia Filhorini Lepique left to co-found Filhorini, Blanco e Cenciareli Global Law Firm.

Clients appreciate the ‘excellent advice and strength in depth’ of DDSA – De Luca, Derenusson, Schuttoff e Azevedo Advogados, with practice head Leila Pigozzi Alves delivering ‘creative solutions’. The practice includes immigration and social security matters.

Dias Carneiro Advogados represents a wide range of international and domestic companies, often – but not exclusively – in the energy, chemical and technology sectors. It assisted Gilead Sciences in negotiating a new profit sharing plan with employees and the labour union. Department head André de Melo Ribeiro also provides advice on anti-corruption and corporate integrity.

Lefosse Advogados acts for numerous international clients, such as Reckitt Benckiser and Royal Bank of Scotland, but also has a strong national client base. Department head Aloizio Ribeiro Lima defended Infosys in 40 labour lawsuits filed by former employees.

Leite, Tosto e Barros Advogados Associados acts for numerous banks as well as energy, technology, infrastructure, automobile and consumer products companies. Practice head Luciana Arduin Fonseca defended BNP Paribas Brasil in a $2.5m labour lawsuit filed by a former bank manager.

Levy & Salomão added HSBC and Schaeffler to its impressive client roster, and recently assisted Camargo Corrêa in a range of matters. Litigation head Angela Di Franco and senior associate Silvia Fidalgo Lira are in charge of the group.

Lobo & Ibeas, under the lead of Denise Bueno, represents a wide range of longstanding clients including Banco Prosper, Johnson & Johnson, and Rio de Janeiro Country Club. It continues to represent several shopping centres in class actions.

Lobo de Rizzo Advogados represented longstanding client Moody’s in relation to the termination of employment of a senior executive, and also assisted the client in establishing a flexible work arrangement policy for Brazil. The practice is now led by Boriska Ferreira Rocha, who joined from CFA Advogados, and Giovanna Sella Freire, with former practice head Andréa Giamondo Massei Rossi now at Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice Advogados. Since the conclusion of research, however, the firm has gone on to hire Fabio Medeiros as new head of practice; he joins from Machado Associados.

Advocacia Maciel regularly advises companies on the handling of accidents at work and work-related illness. Founding partner José Alberto Couto Maciel is the name to note.

Mannrich, Senra e Vasconcelos Advogados (MSV) acts across the entire spectrum of labour and employment law matters, with Nelson Mannrich and Roberto Aguirre Rossetti at the helm of a 13-strong team. The firm is noted for litigation involving unions and former executives, and strategic assistance to mitigate labour risks.

Mattos Engelberg Advogados provides strategic advice and handles litigation, with a strong focus on domestic pharmaceutical clients. The group represented Biosev in several labour claims filed by service providers asserting an employment relationship with the client. Daniel Domingues Chiode and Leonardo Santini Echenique co-head the group, and are recommended along with ‘excellent lawyer’ Marília Minicucci.

In addition to advising on labour law issues related to transactions and representing clients in litigation, Mundie e Advogados has expertise in expatriation policies and the recruitment of high-end executives, including from overseas. Neoenergia is a key client. Practice head Nádia Demoliner Lacerda is recommended.

Peixoto e Cury Advogados handles high-profile labour litigation and class actions for a solid roster of clients, in sectors such as manufacturing, energy, and telecoms. Luiz Vicente de Carvalho and André Villac Polinesio co-head the department.

Rayes & Fagundes Advogados Associados handles a high volume of mandates, assisting a high-profile client roster in both contentious and non-contentious matters. ‘Experienced’ practice head Paula Corina Santone Carajelescov has specialist expertise in the banking and financial sector, and arbitration.

Souto Correa Cesa Lummertz & Amaral Advogados counts Kodak, FIFA and Lenovo among its key clients. A team led by Joel Gallo defended a client in a class action against certain employees; and represented a company in a labour claim following a mass layoff. Paulo Roberto Souto is ‘an experienced negotiator’ who is ‘always up to date’. The firm hired senior counsel Flavio Portinho Sirangelo from the Federal Labor Court of Appeals.
