The Legal 500

Bermuda > Legal market overview

The Bermudian legal market remains mostly dominated by global law firms Appleby and Conyers Dill & Pearman. Of the domestic practices, Cox Hallett Wilkinson and Mello Jones & Martin are widely considered to be the strongest contenders. Attride-Stirling & Woloniecki, Sedgwick Chudleigh and Wakefield Quin also draw high praise.

Some believe that the market is hampered by work permit restrictions, which makes it difficult for firms to recruit overseas lawyers long-term, and that law firms would achieve a higher quality of recruitment at assistant level if there were a chance of such assistants becoming partners. However, non-Bermudians are not permitted to be partners of law firms. As such, many leading attorneys are not formally partners.

Nonetheless, in recognition of Bermuda's increasing importance on the world stage, we have introduced this year three new practice areas: dispute resolution; insurance/reinsurance; and trusts/private client.
