Baker McKenzie is ‘one of the best for TMT issues’ and its group provides ‘reliable and effective advice in regulatory and corporate matters’. Team head Guillermo Cervio is ‘resourceful and diligent’, with an ‘excellent knowledge of telecoms regulations’. Among Cervio’s recent mandates was advice to a major multinational technology company on the potential offering of cloud services in Argentina. Transactional specialist Roberto Grané is also recommended for telecoms, privacy and media matters and paired up with Cervio to advise a global IT company on the local telecoms framework for point of presence devices, M2M and virtual network operator business models. Other key highlights included advising Expedia on a Black Friday promotion launched through its Argentine domain. SAP and Salesforce are also representative clients. Associate Sofía Canavessi left the firm in 2017.

M & M Bomchil houses a diverse TMT practice, with strong expertise across a comprehensive spread of corporate, regulatory and contentious matters. The department is co-led by sector experts Marcelo Bombau and Francisco Gutiérrez, who specialise in corporate matters and regulatory issues respectively, and it also draws on the experience of IP head Adrián Furman and administrative law partner Federico Campolieti. In a headline transactional highlight, the team acted for Viacom on its $345m acquisition of Telefe. Among recent regulatory matters, it advised Clarín Group on several issues relating to the new legal framework for information and communication technologies, and it also represented Nextel Argentina in a regulatory conflict arising from the revocation of several spectrum licences to provide mobile services. The practice group has also recently undertaken work for DirecTV, Pramer and Telecom Argentina.

The ‘very experienced and supportive’, Marval, O'Farrell & Mairal scores highly for its ‘excellent structure, which ensures work gets done quickly’. The ‘extremely business-oriented’ team – which is led jointly by ‘industry leaderGustavo Giay, the ‘very responsiveJavier Etcheverry Boneo and newly promoted partner Daniel Di Paola – shines across the full breadth of broadcasting, media, technology and telecoms matters. In line with its market-leading corporate strength, transactions are a key source of work, but it also has robust capability in regulatory, contentious and even criminal matters. Recent telecoms highlights include advising Time Warner on the private auction for the acquisition of an open-air TV station owned by Telefónica, and the team also acted for Telecom Italia on the high-profile $550.6m sale of Telecom Argentina to Fintech. On the technology side, it advised Watchever Group on the Aregntine launch of an on-demand streaming service. The firm’s impressive client roster also includes BBC, Microsoft and HBO Latin America.

Beccar Varela’s practice sets itself apart through its ‘sound commercial advice’, ‘strong responsiveness’ and ability to ‘deliver within a tight budget and timeframe’. Among the names to note, Emilio Beccar Varela is ‘always extremely responsive and friendly’, while Florencia Rosati provides ‘tailor-made and timely advice’ – together they co-lead both the TMT and IP practices. The firm routinely advises technology, media and telecoms clients on all their key legal requirements including licensing, transactions, regulatory matters and litigation. On the telecoms side, it provides ongoing advice to British Telecom and Sprint regarding day-to-day matters, including contractual agreements and disputes. Among recent technology-related matters, the team advised Deutsche Bank on the sale of its Argentine operations to Banco Comafi, including all related data protection and privacy issues.

The TMT practice at Estudio O'Farrell attracts praise for its ‘excellent customer-oriented service’ and ‘strong industry knowledge’. Regulated industries specialist Agustín Siboldi is the key contact and is highlighted as ‘effective and knowledgeable’. The group specialises in regulatory work, particularly for telecoms companies, and recently advised key client Claro Argentina on various matters, including regarding recent amendments to Argentina’s media and telecoms laws and on conflicts arising from the new sites regulation passed by Bariloche Municipality. Other representative clients include Comunicaciones y Consumos, Nextel Communications Argentina and Movistar Argentina. María Agustina Fanelli Evans, Fernando García Pullés and Jorge Muratorio also dedicate a significant amount of time to TMT matters.

Mid-size firm Sáenz Valiente & Asociados is highly rated for its niche expertise in TMT and houses standalone departments concentrating on telecoms law, sports and entertainment matters, and press, communications and broadcasting law. Name partner José María Sáenz Valiente (h) enjoys a strong reputation for his experience in complex regulatory and contentious matters and the team also includes María Lucila Romero, who is highly regarded for transactional matters. Recent work includes advising key client Grupo Clarín on the proposed separation of its Cable TV and internet divisions.

Bruchou, Fernández Madero & Lombardi is commended for its ‘very knowledgeable and skilled lawyers’ and ‘prompt, attentive and responsive client service’. Administrative and regulatory law lead Ignacio Sanz is a ‘creative and talented lawyer’ and co-heads the practice alongside fellow regulatory specialist Ignacio Minorini Lima – senior associate Marcos Santivañez Vieyra also plays a key role in TMT matters. On the telecoms side, the firm provides ongoing regulatory advice to Encompass Tiba Latin America and Level 3 Communications. Among technology matters, the team advised Monsanto Argentina on data protection and privacy issues.

ICT specialist Lescano & Etcheverry Abogados focuses exclusively on regulatory matters in the telecoms, technology, broadcasting and e-commerce fields, with supplementary expertise in consumer law and antitrust issues. Esteban Lescano handles telecoms and computer law, with strong experience in internet matters, while fellow founding partner Mariana Etcheverry is a specialist in technology matters. BT Latam Argentina and Grupo DATCO are among its key clients.

Pérez Alati, Grondona, Benites, Arntsen & Martínez De Hoz, Jr’s TMT group is particularly active in transactional matters, under the joint leadership of M&A head Jorge Perez Alati and corporate finance and regulated industries specialist Mariano Grondona. In a recent headline deal, the team advised Monotype Imaging on its $130m acquisition of Olapic. It also acted for IFC on its $400m loan to Telecom Personal for the expansion of its 4G high-speed wireless broadband network.

At Hope, Duggan & Silva, the ‘very professional’ Hugo Vivot is recommended for ‘remaining very close to the client’. The team kept busy advising its TMT industry clients on a string of contractual, regulatory and general corporate matters over the past year. Most notably, it advised multinational mobile app company Buongiorno MyAlert on local regulatory issues.

Estudio Ortiz & Asociados has a strong track record in transactional matters, but it also routinely advises telecoms and technology companies in regulatory and contentious issues.
