Portuguese firm Abreu Advogados, together with its local partner FBL Advogados, advises on the full spread of labour, corporate and banking matters and counts numerous banks and financial institutions such as Banco Económico and Standard Chartered Bank among its clients. Other areas of expertise are real estate and insurance matters. Fernando Veiga Gomes and Guilherme Santos Silva are the names to note.

FCB Sociedade de Advogados regularly cooperates with EVC Advogados to provide an ‘irreproachable service’ on the full range of commercial work. Clients include Diamond Offshore Drilling, Lassarat and Svenska. João Robles has a ‘deep understanding of the Angolan market’ and recently advised ConocoPhillips on the liquidation of its Angolan operations. Another Lisbon-based partner with significant knowledge of the Angolan market is Pedro Guimarães.

Lisbon-based PLMJ Lawyers has ‘superb local expertise’ through regularly assisting with the financing and construction of large infrastructure and oil and gas projects. Inês Pinto da Costa led advice to the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development on setting up a facility structure for lending up to $1bn to the Angolan state. Headed by ‘very responsive and helpfulBruno Xavier de Pina, who recently made partner, the team collaborates with GLA – Gabinete Legal Angola.

Brazilian firm Tauil & Chequer Advogados in association with Mayer Brown packs a particular punch in assisting with project and finance work and uses its excellent network in the oil and gas sector to advise Chevron, ENI, Maersk Oil and Sonangol among others. Rio de Janeiro-based Alexandre Chequer and Gonçalo Falcão are highly rated for infrastructure work related to the exploration of natural resources.

Portuguese powerhouse VdA Vieira de Almeida advised Sonangol on its corporate restructuring and assisted the government with drafting its space strategy. Hugo Santos is recommended for banking and finance advice, João Fialho for infrastructure projects and Rui Amendoeira for oil and gas matters. The desk works together with local firm Angola Counsel.

Particularly Clifford Chance’s Amsterdam office includes Angola experts such as David Griston and Pieter van Welzen. With particular expertise in infrastructure projects, it was recently involved in the development of an electricity transmission link to a hydroelectric dam.

Led by Rita Correia, Portuguese firm Miranda & Associados’ Angola desk provides legal advice on all commercial matters with particular expertise in financing work, labour and employment, and tax. Alberto Galhardo Simões, Nuno Gouveia and managing associate Rodrigo Costeira are recommended. Fátima Freitas Advogados is the local partner.

One of Portugal’s largest firms, Morais Leitão, Galvão Teles, Soares da Silva & Associados teams up with ALC Advogados to advise on banking and finance, real estate and employment matters. It is highly rated for handling litigation and international arbitration. The group includes Liliana Malheiro Tomás and Luís Gagliardini Graça.

Portuguese firm Raposo Bernardo acts for numerous banks such as China Development Bank, which retained the group to advise on various financings for construction projects. The ‘sharpNelson Raposo Bernardo and the ‘clear and quickJoana Andrade Correia are recommended.

CMSPatrick Dewerbe and Tiago Machado Graça ‘handle large workloads very well’. The Portugal-based desk cooperates with local firm FTL Advogados and frequently advises foreign companies on entering the Angolan market.

Iberian firm Cuatrecasas cooperates with Elsa Sousa Rodrigues Advogados and recently advised an international logistics company on its corporate restructuring. Rui Mayer’s group covers the full range of commercial, real estate and labour work.

MC&Acombines technical knowledge with commercial acumen’ and recently assisted British American Tobacco with its restructuring and also advised specialty chemical company Sika on the acquisition of plots. Vitor Marques da Cruz and Pedro Gonçalves Paes are based in Portugal.

In collaboration with local firm Expert Legal Assistance, Albuquerque & Associados predominantly provides assistance with investment, labour, oil and gas matters. Lisbon-based Henrique Nogueira Nunes acts for workforce solution provider Airswift, pharmaceutical retailer Farmácias de Angola and air conditioning developer Tecnair.

DLA Piper ABBC, the firm’s Portuguese office, cooperates with ADCA Advogados when advising on its flagship areas of real estate and shipping. The ‘very competentLuís Filipe Carvalho provides full commercial support to Pernod Ricard.

Linklaters’ Angola practice includes lawyers from Portugal, the UK and China. In Lisbon, Francisco Ferraz de Carvalho and Pedro Siza Vieira are recommended next to counsel Diogo Plantier Santos, who led advice to HeidelbergCement on the acquisition of a 56% stake in Cimentos Nacionais de Angola.

Portuguese firm SRS Advogados is particularly regarded for its corporate and TMT work. Nuno Miguel Prata and Octávio Castelo Paulo are the names to note.

Shearman & Sterling LLP’s London partners Sanja Udovicic and Nicholas Buckworth advised Angola LNG on obtaining a $1.79bn financing. The desk is experienced in assisting sponsors, borrowers, finance providers and corporates in Angola.
