In association with:

Diversity and inclusion report

NEW YORK: 7 February 2017

On 7th February, GC Magazine officially launched its second Diversity & Inclusion Special Report in association with Paul Hastings. The event took place at the Paul Hastings New York office.

A group of general counsel, in-house counsel and diversity professional from organizations such as MetLife, Citibank, Yahoo and BMW gathered to hear and join in with a discussion on how we practically ensure diversity and inclusion is advanced both in business and in the legal sector.

The evening was introduced by K Whitner, Litigation Partner and Diversity Co-chair at Paul Hastings and Catherine McGregor, Editor-in-Chief of GC Magazine and Publishing Director, The Legal 500 (In-House).

The discussion was organized around a panel of featuring interviewees from the GC Magazine report giving an appropriately diverse set of perspectives. These were, Jean Lee, CEO, Minority Corporate Counsel Association; Alexa Pappas, Global head of Employment Law, Morgan Stanley; Marjorie De La Cruz, Chief Counsel, Global Groups and Functions, PepsiCo; Eddie Washington, Recruiting Engineer, Genius and Seth Zachery, Chairman, Paul Hastings.

The dynamic and engaged conversation covered a range of areas but with the organizing idea of practical tips and steps to actually effect change. These included:

  • Strategy: Strategy and tone from the top and how the strategic imperative for diversity and inclusion can be best communicated both upwards and downwards in organizations and also more broadly even outside of your own company.
  • Pipeline: Ideas, large or small in scale that you that have made a tangible difference to recruitment for diverse candidates.
  • Inclusion: Making sure we progress diverse candidates in a meaningful way? Again I’d like to focus this on tactics or ideas that you have seen work.
  • The Power of the Client: Using the power of the client, including thoughts on how smaller companies not just larger ones can most effectively wield this.
