On 17 October, The Legal 500 launched the latest edition of the GC Powerlist: Russia, celebrating the achievements of the most prominent, powerful and influential general counsel across Russia. In partnership with our headline sponsor, Baker Botts, and associate sponsor, George Y. Yiangou LLC, the reception was held at the iconic St. Regis Moscow Nikolskaya, bringing together more than 80 of Russia’s best and brightest legal minds.

The selections were the result of a three-month-long research process by The Legal 500’s dedicated client intelligence team. It collated hundreds of nominations from law firm partners and fellow in-house practitioners from both Russia and abroad, before narrowing down the field to the 100 general counsel identified, through a series of interviews followed by quantitative and qualitative research. The full list of those included, ranging from the likes of Aeroflot and Nike, through to Kaspersky Lab and Gazprom, can be found here.

The evening began with an introduction from GC magazine editor Alex Speirs, highlighting the achievements of those being celebrated, as well as responses to the challenging domestic economic and political environment.

‘In a time when currency fluctuations and international sanctions continue to influence – some might say dominate – the work of general counsel, the resounding success stories which emerged during the research process truly speak to the quality of those on the list,’ said Speirs.

Maxim Levinson, partner-in-charge of the Moscow office of Baker Botts, followed Speirs, discussing the importance of initiatives such as the GC Powerlist.

‘It is incredibly important for law firms to understand their clients’ needs, and to be on top of the latest trends in corporate lawyering. We were privileged to have the opportunity to mingle with the best of the best in this regard from across Russia, at The Legal 500 GC Powerlist: Russia 2017 launch event,’ said Levinson.
