The Legal 500/GC Magazine and GC Powerlist event in Zurich brought a range of Switzerland’s finest in-house counsel together to celebrate the launch of the nomination process for this year’s GC Powerlist Switzerland Teams. The event was focused on a panel discussion of the perennially challenging subject of talent management for in-house teams and what makes a great in-house team. Given, this year’s GC Powerlist will be selecting the leading teams in Switzerland, the panel framed some of the key concepts around team management in a lively and far reaching discussion. The event was hosted in association with Froriep.

Key points to emerge from the discussions included the importance of evoking shared culture; this was fundamental, particularly for those panelists who had large and globally diverse teams. For many general counsel, the technical legal skills are only one part of the picture these days as the remit of an in-house lawyer has become so diverse, so it is cultural fit which becomes the magic ingredient in the search for new hires.

We considered the continual challenge of employee retention and engagement in what is, usually, a flat structure, where a lawyer’s career path is less well mapped than in private practice. Increasingly the answer our panelists felt, was to introduce lateral challenges and increasing autonomy and responsibility for their team members.

The increased role of technology in regards to changing legal department processes and staffing was a significant issue. Another point of interest for our audience was how companies might need to start a changing their ways of working to accommodate millennial and indeed the way in which those of Generation Y might begin to change the way the businesses themselves operate, particularly in regards to an increased focus on social responsibility from employers amongst that group.
