On 24 November the best in-house legal teams in Turkey attended Çırağan Palace, a prestigious former Ottoman palace overlooking the Bosphorus, for the launch of The Legal 500’s GC Powerlist: Turkey Teams. The event saw over 160 in-house counsel from the list’s 100 legal teams gather to celebrate their successful inclusion in the Powerlist.

The GC Powerlist is a publication designed to highlight the most influential and innovative general counsel in a market, involving a three month process of nominations, background research and interviews.

Teams were present from market-leading Turkish and multinational companies such as: Aviva, British American Tobacco, Doğan TV Holding, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Finansbank, Porland, İçdaş, N11, Procter & Gamble, Sabancı Holding, TAV Airports Holding, Türk Telekom, 3M, GAMA Power Systems, Google, GlaxoSmithKline, Karadeniz Holding, Media Markt, Novo Nordisk, Shaya, Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline, Tofaş Türk, as well as many more.

After brief introductions from The Legal 500 and Esin Attorney Partnership, the sponsors of the list and event in Turkey, there was a short interactive panel session featuring five of the general counsel from the Powerlist. Entitled “More than just a lawyer”, the panel focused on the increasing ability of GCs to influence the commercial outputs and strategic planning of their companies. As the world becomes more regulated and more business is done across markets, the in-house lawyer is seeing their role grow into new places within the business. Using examples, the panel were able to outline the steps that they had taken to adapt to this new role.

One GC told us on the night: “The recognition for the team is fantastic. We are very happy that our unique approach has been recognised by The Legal 500”.

After the event, numerous GCs were in contact with us to state their thanks. Some of the highlights of the feedback include: “it is an honour to be listed in The Legal 500 GC Powerlist for Turkey”; “[we are] proud and privileged to be part of the GC Powerlist”; and that their team was “just really happy”.

It is obvious to state that companies in Turkey have faced their share of uncertainty in recent times, but with the help of their in-house legal teams business has been able to continue with relative success.
